Launch of Tony Davis’s book ‘White Sails & Charcoal’
I am delighted to report that the long-awaited book by Tony Davis, 'White Sails & Charcoal: Stories of Coincidence, Bella Kelly and Carrolup' has been published by Hesperian Press. I was thrilled to attend the book launch last Saturday in Tony’s home town of Albany. It was an important and moving occasion. The book, which covers many fascinating aspects of Western Australian history, is a cracking read.

This year marks 10 years since the Collection of Carrolup Children’s Artwork returned to WA and John Curtin Gallery, under the guidance of the Carrolup Elders Reference Group, became the custodian.

Coinciding with the 10th year anniversary, another 10 drawings created by Australian First Nations Stolen Generations children have been added to the Collection.

Three of these drawings were donated by Curtin Fine Arts graduate Priscilla Kelly, the granddaughter of Charles Cook who was the Carrolup school inspector in 1950.

As part of the anniversary celebrations, the John Curtin Gallery is exhibiting never-before-seen footage of the child artists creating their precious works in the 1940s, after they had been forcibly taken from their families.

“Every single work created by the children of Carrolup offers another window into their story and our history with every new connection taking us a step closer to healing and reconciling the past.”

- John Curtin Gallery’s Carrolup Manager, Kathleen Toomath

The anniversary exhibition, ‘Kalyagool Karni-Wangkiny ([Telling Truth Always) – A Decade of Carrolup’, runs until July 9 at the Curtin Gallery.

Mary Durack Miller’s ‘Carrolup Collection’
I find it hard to believe that it is seven years since I first came across Mary Durack Miller’s collection of material at the Battye Library in Perth related to the Aboriginal child artists of Carrolup.... it was so important to have this material, as John and I have been able to use the words of the people involved in this inspiring story and provided other people access to the material.

Our global search for Carrolup artworks unearthed a historic piece drawn by 13-year-old Noongar artist, Ross Jones, more than 70 years ago.

On hearing Curtin’s international search for works created by Australian First Nations children at WA’s Carrolup Native Settlement after they were forcibly removed from their families in the 1940s, Manjimup-based retired neonatal paediatrician Dr Patrick Pemberton recognised the piece in his home.

Purchased by his father from the London-based Foyles Art Gallery in 1951, the John Curtin Gallery retrieved a photo in their archives of Ross, at age 13, holding the same stunning pastel drawing.

The process of reconnecting Carrolup artworks with families is at the heart of Curtin’s Carrolup Centre for Truth-telling - an ambitious undertaking to create a permanent home for the collection in Australia and provide an opportunity for others to learn about this tragic period in Australian history.

Tracing the art of a Stolen Generation: the child artists of Carrolup was supported by Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries Western Australia, Australian High Commission in the United Kingdom, British Council Australia, BHP John Curtin Gallery, Curtin University and The Portico Library

If you think you may have found a historic Carrolup children’s artwork, get in touch with John Curtin Gallery. 🖤❤️💛

Magical Happenings in Carrolup Schoolroom and Beyond
Some months ago, I thought it was time to write a blog post summarising major happenings at Carrolup Native Settlement during the second half of the 1940s. However, I didn’t post the summary immediately and then forgot all about it. Recently, I was going through the website database and found the article. I think it's time I posted it to the website.

Bella Kelly (1915 – 1994)
Bella Kelly born in 1915 at Mount Barker, 360km south of Perth West Australia (WA). Bella’s birth name is Isobel Colbung. It's believed that Bella had a strong association with the WA Native Aboriginal Settlement Carrolup. Bella was not known as one of the renowned child artists from the Carrolup Native Settlement, but Bella is recognised as being the greatest influence on the development of what is known as the Carrolup School of Art. Truly the first Australian landscape painting movement that is still alive and well in Australian communities.
