It was a great time working with these women.
Community Services recently ran a 4-week workshop in March for Indigenous women to participate in art therapy, which was facilitated by Dr. Francine Riches. Dr. Riches is a Bardi/Jawi woman born in the Kimberley region and is a professional visual artist with a career spanning 35 years. She has exhibited her work nationally and internationally.
The workshop focused on creative expression in a safe environment and caring space, with the sharing of stories being encouraged. The event was well received with women gaining a greater understanding of how grief can affect them physically, emotionally, and mentally. Many people find it easier to express their emotions through drawing, painting, or other art forms than through words.
Studies have shown that art therapy can help people with coping with mental health conditions. It can assist those that experience anxiety, depression, trauma,, low self-esteem, and similar disorders. It is also effective for people with serious health conditions, such as cancer, people working to develop effective coping skills, and for those experiencing physical pain during hospitalisation.
For anyone experiencing mental health challenges, we encourage you to seek further professional support.
