‘Silent Land' speaks to the particular comfort I find in the landscape; the way it holds you, envelops you and allows you to just be. I remember first feeling this as a child without quite knowing how to name it then, but finding a kind of permission in the silence, to just walk and notice the details in the landscape. No need to disturb the peace with spoken words; just the land and the quiet and the simple fact of being a small part of something bigger. That same feeling returns to me now, decades on, whenever I stand in a landscape and let the sounds of nature wash over me, whether that's at Lake Weyba, in my bushland garden or at the beach. In this painting, the field barns speak to the past, the eucalypt motifs to the present and the raindrops speak to my journey between the two.

'Second Sky' is about the experience of seeing one landscape inside another, an English sky glimpsed within an Australian one, and just as often the reverse, the two never fully separate, always overlapping somewhere in my mind. The banksia leaves falling from the sky are printed forms that, on another day, in another light, might just as easily have been oak leaves from the Yorkshire landscape. A eucalypt branch frames the scene the way memory frames a place, suggesting a deeper journey into a place where memories drift and fuse. This is what it means to see two skies at once, not one replacing the other, but both melded together overhead.

I’m starting to feel a bit like a clown in a circus at the moment, juggling lots of new creative thoughts. Some are 2D and some 3D. As a progression from the Gel Printers Summit I’ve been continuing to explore transparency with my prints and layering them with my monotypes. I’m just making small studies at the moment to test ways of layering, density of paint and the resulting transparency, and to see how quickly the image beneath gets obscured with varying numbers of paper layers. I have a new ‘Wall of Curiosities’ underway...😉

‘The Land I Carry’ speaks to my experience of feeling as though I belong to two different places at once. This painting holds what has accumulated within me over the years, as someone who has lived in, and loved, two very different landscapes. I have brought reflections of one into the life lived in the other. To carry the land is to hold both places inside myself, to know instinctively the feel of each, the quality of the light the smell of the earth, the richness of the colours. Finding this knowledge surfacing in the making of the work is to understand that ‘place’ is not only where I stand today, but also where I have come from.

‘Where the Clouds End’ is inspired by the uplifting feeling of walking in the Yorkshire Dales, weaving across hillsides, climbing to the peaks, until you reach the edge of the earth where the clouds seem close enough to touch. There's a particular kind of freedom up there, where the sky is so close on every side and the horizon stretches further than you'd thought possible from the valley below. I have the same feeling here on the Sunshine Coast, a different horizon, but the same elevating sense of being able to reach up and touch the deep blue sky. These two places, from memory and in the present meet in this painting, joined together by the Australian native banksia motif in print and paint.

‘Between Two Skies’ holds a feeling I know well; standing somewhere that isn't quite one place or the other, but a threshold entirely its own, suspended between two skies that both belong to me. This piece isn't a record of two separate landscapes so much as the feeling of standing at the point where they meet, where the warm Australian sky melds with the cool Yorkshire sky, above a landscape woven from both; symbolic organic prints from my garden, eucalypt motifs and Yorkshire field barns.
