A peaceful day spent in quiet contemplation with a work in progress and inspiring landscapes by Russell Drysdale. The very best kind of day. A reminder that as artists we are part of a continuum of creative endeavour, and what a joy that is 🩷

I’m a wanderer; I do my best thinking when I’m out walking in nature, taking in the landscape. I find it restorative and calming and it creates space for new creative ideas to emerge and take shape. This intimate painting evokes the feeling of following an unfolding trail into the distance, one that leads to new perspectives and the possibility of discovering new wonders. Capturing the mystery and beauty of such a journey in layers of vibrant colour and texture, this piece invites you into an imagined landscape to find quiet moments of reflection.

This painting evokes my childhood memories of exploring the Devonshire coastline and finding hidden worlds filled with treasure below the water’s surface in deep, still rockpools. These places existed only temporarily and were gone on the next high tide but my sense of delight in them remains as a memory, as each pool offered new discoveries. ‘The Rockpool’ became a contemplation on the way that small, hidden places can hold entire universes. And that this holds true for me too. There are places within myself, that are alive with fleeting reflections, shifting light, ripples of energy and lively treasures.

This painting was inspired by my realisation that the need for experiential perspective is an essential part of the human condition.
‘The Eyrie’ invites you to rise above the noise and chatter to a place of stillness, and from this vantage point, gain clarity and see the genuine truth of things.
The layered sweeping forms in the composition leads to a higher place of solitude, in the form of the blue tree, which, whilst not fully realised as a visual element in the painting, offers further promise to those of us looking for clarity about our life experiences.

This painting is a celebration of growth; the emotional kind that happens slowly, almost imperceptibly, until one day it’s undeniably evidenced. This piece speaks to the experiences that prompt a deeper exploration of personal narratives, deepen our roots, strengthen our connections to one another and ultimately show us the way to resilience so that we can truly flourish as whole and sentient beings.

'Shadowland' became an exploration of my relationship with light and dark, the seen and unseen and a recognition that the threshold between the two states offers a point of personal transformation.

Acknowledging and integrating our ‘shadows’ creates a pathway of personal growth towards wholeness, and a more genuine sense of self.

Through the making of this painting, I found myself drawn into a deeper inquiry about what ‘authenticity’ means in relation to the way in which my true self emerges naturally and spontaneously in my creative work.
