Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival celebrates Penola’s rich literary history, artists, live music, performing arts, film, kids activities and Coonawarra’s fine food and wine. The Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Association Incorporated is a voluntary, non-profit organisation. Since its inception, our Festival has attracted major events and exhibitions that appeal a broad demographic. It is with our s

incere thank you to our Festival’s Friends, Sponsors and Event registrations – thanks for your generosity and patience through COVID-19 and cancellation of the 2020 Festival. Evolving since 1991, our 2015 UNESCO Award winning Festival will celebrate its 30th year in 2022. The Festival has grown to become ”one of South Australia’s leading arts festivals,” said Mrs Helen Rice, Adelaide United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Chairperson. Our Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival was one of four recipients honoured by UNESCO, Adelaide Chapter ‘for an outstanding contribution to the regional cultural life of South Australia, promoting all facets of the Arts, and cultural tourism.’
In 2013 our Festival was awarded an South Australian Regional Award, from Brand South Australia. This award highlights individuals or organisations that have made significant contribution to their region and the State over a twelve month period.

🎨 We’re thrilled to announce Sophia Weston from Coonawarra as the winner of the 2026 Penola Coonawarra Arts Festival Design Prize!
Judged by Ella Huisman (pictured) of Adelaide Fringe and proudly supported by Hansen Design and Print, the prize recognises Sophia’s vibrant design suite, which will feature across promotional material for our 35th Festival in 2027.
Sophia says her artwork shows creative expression flowing “from within a heart to the outer community”, with ribbons representing the many art forms and passionate artists that bring the Festival to life.
You can see Sophia’s winning design — along with all Design Prize entries — at Still Water Studio from Friday 4 September, with the exhibition remaining on display for the rest of the month.

The 2026 Design Prize posters have been judged! A huge shout out to Ella from Adelaide Fringe for being our wonderful judge again this year. Also, it would be remiss to not thank our fantastic sponsor, Hansen Design & Print for the $1000 prize money! The winner will be announced on socials and via our website on Friday, September 4 and all of the entries will be displayed at Still Water Studio for the month. Thank you to the designers for entering, and to Peta for taking the posters on a road trip!

A shout out to our SALA mates and Art lovers, you are invited to join the SALA workshop at Zema Estate on Sunday 30 August with local artist Ruth Schubert.

Ruth will be running a Cyanotype Printing Workshop, where you’ll use sunlight and natural materials such as leaves, flowers, feathers and old lace to create your own beautiful Prussian Blue prints. A truly spectacular creative process that you will be proud to keep!

It’s something a little different, no artistic experience is needed, and it’s suitable for adults and children aged 10+ (children need to attend with a parent or guardian).

🎟 $65 per person, including all materials and a glass of Zema Estate w**e on arrival.
