Chuck Mayfield’s Artist Interview offers an in-depth look at his practice and the creation of the futuristic neon-inspired backdrops developed for the ‘Capture the Spirit’ activations across both Lunar New Year and Christmas. Filmed in his studio, the video follows Chuck as he reflects on his artistic approach, his evolving visual language, and the ideas that shape his bold reinterpretation of seasonal imagery.

Through conversation, Chuck explores how colour, light, and abstraction sit at the core of his work, alongside personal reflections on holiday culture and the ways tradition can be reimagined through a contemporary lens. Watch the development of his backdrops, from early sketches and experimental studies through to the final large-scale neon-inspired environments.

The feature highlights the energy and experimentation behind his process, showing how the futuristic side of both activations was constructed through layered visual exploration, technical play, and a strong commitment to pushing festive aesthetics into unexpected territory.

PART TWO: The Painting.

In a rare twist, we’re taking you behind the scenes of our next activation, ‘Capture the Spirit’. In this 3-part series you’ll see the process of how we bring this activation to life.

Painting Process: I used the Wagner Control Pro with a 517 tip for the entire paint. Changing from a white filter (prime and base coats) to a yellow filter for the metallic.

All paint was Resene cause it’s smooth like butter and so easy to apply! I began by priming the entire structure with a Quick Dry Primer, then sprayed black Lumbersider inside each environment section. After that, I measured, masked, and painted the black strip around the exterior. The rest of the exterior was coated in ‘Apache’ Lumbersider as a base coat before applying the ‘Gold Dust’ metallic layer. Once the painting was complete, I removed all masking, cleaned any overspray in the black areas, and finished by taping and painting the black line detail.

It was an absolute pleasure, as always, working with to bring her mural ‘Growth’ to life at Kalkallo North community Centre with the invaluable assistance of .louise_art.

Rooted in the theme of growth, this mural by Manda Lane brings new energy to the walls of the Kalkallo North Community Centre.

Developed in collaboration with the local community and supported by the City of Hume, the artwork celebrates the area’s natural environment and its steady emergence as a vibrant, evolving neighbourhood.

Featuring a carefully selected mix of native species — Narrowleaf New Holland Daisy, Necklace Fern, Milk Maid flowers, and Eucalyptus leaves — the design honours both the ecological and communal growth taking place in the region.

A bold background, chosen through community consultation, adds warmth, optimism, and a sense of welcome — inviting residents to take pride in their shared space.

Bright, botanical, and deeply connected to place, Growth is a visual reminder of the things that take root when creativity, collaboration, and community come together.

I’m feeling a little lost for words as I try to write this. 15 years. Wow. Where to start?

What a wild ride! Sometimes I wonder where the time has gone, other times I think back through the years at the opportunities we’ve had, and the moments we’ve shared and I’m so grateful for it all. For the artists, clients, staff and volunteers, supporters, lovers and fans they are, YOU are, the ones who’ve made Just Another what it is today.

So as a way or saying THANK YOU and showing our respect, I wanted to try and create something a little special so I spoke to Just Another Artist about creating a custom print featuring a range of our favourite moments and projects, paying respect and homage to the artists, clients, supporters and agency teams for all their incredible work over the last 15.

Can you guess the 10 projects included?

Our ‘15 Years Print’ available to purchase over at the Just Another Website (link in bio).

Thank you to Cax for the incredible artwork and to all of you for supporting us over the last 15 Years! We can’t wait to see what’s possible over the next 15!

In partnership with Knox City Council for the 2024 ‘Immerse’ program, we are proud to have curated the work of three incredible First Nations artists; Charlotte Allingham, Jeswri, and Molly Hunt.

The 2024 Immerse event marked the return to physical programming after a five year pandemic hiatus. Immerse promotes ‘Art in Unexpected Places’, and we were honoured to be part of such a thoughtfully curated program to activate and reinvigorate the public realm.

Coinciding with NAIDOC week, the artists submitted a series of digital illustrations in their own style, responding to their perspectives on country, culture and connection. Individually drawing on their unique backgrounds as part of the Wiradjuri and Ngiyampaa, Gadigal, Balanaggarra and Yolngu communities, each work tells the story of the artists personal experiences and individual identities.

Installed into lightboxes at three different locations across the City of Knox, each work was imbued with a glowing effect that complimented and brought to life the artists’ visual narratives. The themes of each piece were highlighted (literally and figuratively) by the innovative light box installation, making a high-impact statement day or night, illuminating the heart of the neighbourhood.

Pop down to see them all for yourself. Link to the locations are in our bio.
