Susie Dee on a lifetime spent staging the revolution: ‘Theatre can shift consciousness’

“We think we’re all doing our little bit for the world and society,” Dee says. “We sign our petitions. We might go to a rally. But I think it’s about trying to activate an audience a little bit more to take something on.” The idea that theatre can achieve this is “why I’m an artist and why I still keep working” she says. “I still feel theatre can shift consciousness.”

Interview with Susie Dee (past UHT Artistic Director)

The Australian director has presented her vital works around the globe for four decades, but she always comes back to Melbourne

Union House Theatre is back with Nora: A Doll’s House.

“Stef Smith’s adaptation shows us just how little has changed in the fight for women's rights. This play has become only more relevant since it was first written, and an amazing team of students and creatives have come together to bring this production to life.”

Joanna Guelas interviews the creatives of 'Nora: A Doll's House' for Farrago Magazine

Union House Theatre (UHT) returns to campus this week with Stef Smith’s Nora: A Doll’s House, a radical retelling of Henrik Ibsen’s classic A Doll’s House, and a crucial and relevant tale about women’s rights throughout the last century.

Interview with the Actors in UHT’s Nora: A Doll’s House

"Within this play, it’s quite clear love’s there but it’s a really toxic, unhealthy relationship. I think that’s something that’s not really talked about a lot, it still seems a little bit taboo, especially for young women, because you’re led to believe well if I love someone then I stay with them and I make it work—and that’s what love is."

Celia Harvey interviews the actors of ‘Nora: A Doll’s House’, Leah Bourne and James Madsen-Smith on The Dialog

🕵️ Inspector Sydney Catchlove & the Nonsensical Summoning of What Was to Come - SEM 1 SHOW 🕵️
Presented by Mudcrabs - Melbourne University Comedy Revue Board

Collaboratively devised by Leah Bourne, Olive Cullen, Oscar Hales, Smriti Hosur, Rebecca Vincent and James Robertson

Kooky murderers and silly crimes abound as Inspector Sydney Catchlove leads the OINK detective agency on a host of odd cases.

'Inspector Sydney Catchlove and the Nonsensical Summoning of What Was to Come' takes our morbid fascination with serial killers, mass murderers and general ne’er-do-wells into the realm of comedy. This collaboratively devised comedy piece follows Inspector Sydney Catchlove, the leader of an incompetent detective agency who try to solve the oddest of murders and fail spectacularly in the process.

✍️ Student Theatre Reviewers Wanted ✍️
Do you have a passion for thinking and writing about the performing arts?
Are you available to see shows in 2022 on campus? We’d love to hear from you!
Applications are now OPEN for The Dialog review team.

The review team is made up of students who are both knowledgeable and representative of the Student Theatre Community.
We have a diverse program of performances including new work, existing plays, dance, works in Mandarin, musicals, physical theatre, comedy, site-specific performance and more! There may also be the opportunity to review some external works.

Union House Theatre is committed to forming a diverse team of reviewers to add to the critical discourse on theatrical works on campus. We are looking for current UniMelb students:

▪ from 1st year to post-grad
▪ both local and international
▪ are theatre lovers

To apply, email [email protected] with the subject ‘Review Team—[Your Name]’. Tell us a bit about yourself, your interest in theatre, and why you think you would make a good reviewer (a paragraph or two is plenty). If this sounds like you, send us your application!

Saw 'Ida' again tonight with 25 or so of my Year 9 Drama students. They loved it (especially 'H***y For Jesus', of course), so thank you again for a fantastic show. Chookas for the last two shows, and thanks for the nostalgia trip you've sent me on these last few days. It's been much more moving and impactful than I expected it to be. :)
To the cast and crew of 'Ida', thank you for a wonderful evening's entertainment, firstly, and, secondly, for making us 'alumni' feel almost like a part of the show with the way we were treated and looked after. It was fantastic to see the show we made all those years ago reinterpreted and, if anything, made even more relevant today than it was then, which I think you managed incredibly well. Enjoy the last few performances, and congratulations again on a fabulous show.
