LEON RUSSELL BLACK | MUNUPI ARTS
For Leon Russell Black, painting is a way of recording life in Pirlangimpi.
Working exclusively with natural ochres on black grounds, his paintings draw upon hunting, fishing and travelling through Country on the Tiwi Islands. Built through intricate fields of repeated marks, these lived experiences become compositions that are both deeply personal and unmistakably Tiwi.
Leon began painting in 2017 after learning from his mother, Lidwina (Nina) Puruntatameri, and drawing inspiration from his grandfather Romuald Puruntatameri, a respected Tiwi artist, cultural leader and songman. Since then, his work has been exhibited widely across Australia, including at Melbourne Art Fair and TARNANTHI Festival, and has been selected as a finalist in the Wynne Prize, Telstra NATSIAA, Churchie Emerging Art Award and Hadley’s Art Prize.
“In my paintings I can tell everything about my life in Pirlangimpi, paint all these things in the Tiwi way, in my way, my own way.”
