AJ TAYLOR | PAPERBARKS

Built through layers of oil paint and abrasion with a handheld sander, AJ Taylor’s paintings move between construction and erosion. Surface becomes memory, with traces of previous marks emerging through successive acts of covering and revealing.

ZAK TILLEY | NEW IN THE GALLERY

Drawing upon a reported cryptid sighting near Tower Hill, Victoria, in the early 1980s, ‘Worry Quarry’ occupies a space between landscape, memory and folklore. Rather than documenting the event itself, Tilley turns his attention to the terrain that held it, treating the quarry as a site where observation, testimony and imagination become inseparable.

Charged with expressive brushwork and vivid passages of colour, the painting reconstructs the landscape as something at once familiar and elusive. Fragmented forms emerge and dissolve across the surface, inviting viewers into a scene that resists certainty and rewards prolonged looking.

LEON RUSSELL BLACK | MUNUPI ARTS

For Leon Russell Black, painting is a way of recording life in Pirlangimpi.

Working exclusively with natural ochres on black grounds, his paintings draw upon hunting, fishing and travelling through Country on the Tiwi Islands. Built through intricate fields of repeated marks, these lived experiences become compositions that are both deeply personal and unmistakably Tiwi.

Leon began painting in 2017 after learning from his mother, Lidwina (Nina) Puruntatameri, and drawing inspiration from his grandfather Romuald Puruntatameri, a respected Tiwi artist, cultural leader and songman. Since then, his work has been exhibited widely across Australia, including at Melbourne Art Fair and TARNANTHI Festival, and has been selected as a finalist in the Wynne Prize, Telstra NATSIAA, Churchie Emerging Art Award and Hadley’s Art Prize.

“In my paintings I can tell everything about my life in Pirlangimpi, paint all these things in the Tiwi way, in my way, my own way.”

Works by Leon Russell Black are currently on view in Ngini Ngarwulla Kirrijipuni – Our Clay: Natural Ochres for Painting and Story at Martin Browne Contemporary.

On view until 27th June.

SIMPLICIA TIPUNGWUTI | MUNUPI ARTS | NOW SHOWING

Across dense fields of repeated marks, Simplicia Tipungwuti transforms the visual language of Pupuni Jilamara into paintings of remarkable intricacy and scale.

Traditionally painted onto the bodies of dancers during important Tiwi ceremonies, these ceremonial designs form the foundation of Simplicia’s practice. Built through rhythmic patterning and finely structured geometries, her paintings unfold slowly across the surface, revealing layer upon layer of interconnected forms.

Working from Pirlangimpi on Melville Island, Simplicia has painted with Munupi Arts since 2019 and has exhibited both nationally and internationally, including at TARNANTHI Festival and London’s Saatchi Gallery. Her ambitious large-scale paintings demonstrate a distinctive approach to Tiwi painting, balancing the precision of ceremonial design with a dynamic contemporary sensibility.

Works by Simplicia Tipungwuti are currently on view in Ngini Ngarwulla Kirrijipuni – Our Clay: Natural Ochres for Painting and Story at Martin Browne Contemporary.
