Jess MacNeil
‘Threshold’
Acrylic sheet and oil paint
25.5 x 23 x 29cm

Suspended at the irrevocable point where gravity takes hold after impact, the figure in ‘Threshold’ is held in a liminal space of creation and disintegration. Splintered, volatile, evasive, pervasive; the figure continuously emerges and dissolves in an ongoing process of constructive destruction. ‘Threshold’ embodies the intense fragility and immense power and vigour of life force.

About :

Jess MacNeil’s unique and rigorous art practice spans 2 decades and diverse media. Drawing her subjects from empirical experience, MacNeil’s highly materially sensitive works explore the situation of the human subject and the nuances of lived experience. MacNeil’s work has been widely exhibited across Australia and internationally to high critical and public acclaim. Curated into important public exhibitions and recognized through multiple prizes, awards, scholarships, residencies, grants and commissions, her practice has been critically reviewed across print and digital media and in the press. Her work now forms part of many major public and private collections within Australia and internationally.

Johannes van Nunen
‘Lockdown’
Mixed media; vintage tattered calico, paper and twine. Steel wire, clay and acrylics
40 x 100 x 60cm

Lockdown. Just us and our vulnerable souls. A neoteric sensation of imprisonment. Shackled while unbound. Trapped only by our shared human frailty. Virtually wrapped up and tied down. Mummified. A forced paralysis, making us stay put. Longing to feel human again is the only thing we do. Broken bodies preserved for future endeavours. Slowly losing our minds. However, losing faith we will not. We see the other side, where our future self will exist.

About :

Johannes P. C. van Nunen, Tom Bass Prize Finalist 2020 and Woollahra Small Sculpture Finalist 2019. Born in the Netherlands in 1969, he works predominantly in the medium of sculpture. He received a BA Graphic Design (1990) from the Graphic Lyceum, Amsterdam, MA Visual Arts (1993), The University of the Arts, Utrecht. Since his move to Australia in 2010 his figurative sculptures explore the impact of migration on the human body and soul. haunting embalmed lost souls captured in a brief moment of their journey, adorned with the baggage of their own existence. now perpetual lockdowns give a new perspective.

Elke Wohlfahrt
‘The Dancer’
Welded metal
55 x 29 x 36cm

I met my husband while he was a professional ballet dancer. This sparked in me a passion for ballet and dance of all kinds. As a sculptor, I often refer to the figurative qualities of dance and in this piece I bent, crushed, twisted, and welded discarded metal pieces targeting the illusion of movement. The resulting arabesques evoke the dynamic power and elegance of a dancer. Its basal single point of contact mimics the flight and freedom of a weightless pirouette.

About :

Elke Wohlfahrt is a German-born Australian visual artist with a BVA (hons) degree in sculpture, performance & installation from Sydney University - Sydney College of the Arts and Advanced Diplomas of Visual Art in painting and sculpture from Sydney Gallery School (Tafe Meadowbank). She has exhibited widely in Australia and Overseas.

‘A Weight On My Mind’
Ceramic with rock inclusions. Oxidisation firing to 1240 ̊C.
33 x 20 x 40cm

‘A Weight On My Mind’ explores the inner struggle of a person battling mental illness. The gesture of the figure is both relaxed and tense, suggesting that the subject is physically idle but mentally preoccupied.

About :
I predominantly work with clay although my love of drawing, textiles and mixed media is also evident in my work. My work is fired in electric, gas or wood kilns. I started working with clay in 1976 with Margaret Tuckson. I have a degree in Performing Arts/Theatre from UWS 1991 and a MA Vis Arts/Ceramics from ANU 2019. I have been teaching ceramics to small groups in my home studio in the Blue Mountains since 2014.

Gray Nicol
‘Good Person (repaired)’
Terracotta
37 x 24 x 20cm

The title refers to Brecht’s good person of Szechwan, Shen Te, who, though striving to be a good person, adopts a more ruthless male alter-ego, Shui Ta, in order to survive in an imperfect world. Here, the terracotta representation of the character, or actor
as Shui Ta, already cracked in firing, was further broken, reassembled and repaired, leaving the joins visible.

About Gray Nicol:

I was born in Australia, graduated MFA (sculpture) from Elam School of Fine Art, and was subsequently engaged in an architectural sculpture program for the next seven years. This was followed by two spells over three years working for a London restoration company doing architectural carving. I have since had my own workshops in New Zealand and Australia, and am currently working in Melbourne. The most recently completed public commission is a commemorative work for Trades Hall, Melbourne, soon to be installed.

John Lynch
‘Stargazing’
Carrara statuary marble
34 x 32 x 18cm

‘Stargazing’ reflects on the stillness and being of laying back and gazing at the night sky. There is a rock formation where
I live that inspired me. Stone is of the
earth but holds the ancient histories of the universe in its minerals. The veining of the marble somewhat resembles a galaxy or gas clouds. The head is simplified to the point of it being just a large pebble.

About :

John has been a sculptor for over forty years and has a degree in fine arts, graduate diploma in art education and graduate certificate in design. He is Head Teacher of Central Coast Sculpture School and enjoys a balance of teaching and making sculpture. He is represented in public and private collections. John believes that materials have innate qualities that are integral to the nature of sculpture and enable the viewer to connect with the artwork through their knowledge and cultural understanding of the media. He wants to connect with the viewer on an intellectual plane as well as aesthetically.

Penny Byrne
‘ With Hong Kong (2019)’
Hand blown glass, mild steel wire Life sized

This work is my response to the massive pro-democracy protests that occurred in Hong Kong in 2019. As protection from riot police firing tear gas and rubber bullets, many protesters wore yellow construction helmets, goggles, and grey gas masks with pink filters bought from hardware stores. I’ve had many social media comments from people in Hong Kong thanking me for making it.

About :
Penny Byrne is a contemporary artist based in Melbourne, Australia. Her recent focus has been on large-scale protests and political activism around the world that address fundamental human rights. Her practice is grounded in the repurposing of found objects, such as antique porcelain figurines. She also creates works in glass and bronze. In 2015, her glass work was exhibited in the Venice Biennale exhibition Glasstress Gotika. She has also had her figurative glass works included in Unbreakable: Women in Glass (2020), Venice, Italy, and in Glasstress: Window to the Future (2021) at The State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg, Russia.
