Cyclones and storms can be scary for people of all ages, especially the young people in our community. They can feel overwhelmed, scared, anxious and full of big feelings. Every young person is different and will react differently while going through a natural disaster.

A few days ago we shared a storybook resource by Queensland Health called 'Birdie and the Cyclone'. Here are some other things you can do together:

✨ Create your own social story.
With your young people, create your own story about characters who experience a cyclone. Be as imaginative as you'd like to be, making sure you encourage your young people to explore the feelings that characters may be feeling. You may even act it out!

✨ If you have access to power, play your child's favourite music and have a dance party if the noise of the storm is too overwhelming.

✨ Play "Move Like a Cyclone".
In this game, have your young person move around a space as if they were a storm so they can feel more comfortable with what is going on outside. You can also get them to make some funny storm noises and ask them to act out other types of weather. Just make sure they don't get too dizzy!

✨ Draw a cyclone.
Given that these massive storms form in a swirling pattern, it may be a fun activity for your young person to draw or paint their own spiralling cyclone. Make it as colourful as you want!

We hope these creative activities support you and your young people over the next few days 😊

We are STOKED to announce that following it's critically acclaimed season last year, The Playground in the Sky is coming back for return season in the first week of the September school holidays at the Ron Hurley Theatre 🛝☁️

Who says a playground has to be on the ground?

After floods have devastated the streets of Brisbane, ten-year-old George looks for a silver lining after his family’s home has been ruined. He finds it in a mysterious girl, Melanie, who shows George an impossible playground hidden on a floating island above the city. On this playground in the sky, George, Melanie, and all the neighbourhood kids discover the joys and hardships of moving on from disaster through imagination, friendship, and embracing the wonderful unknown.

With a brand new cast, we can't wait to take you on this magical journey to the playground of your dreams ✨
