Piano Carnival is a celebration of the piano by two of Melbourne’s most celebrated pianists and composers, Ania Reynolds and Romy Hernandez, featuring original compositions and music that has been inspired by their diverse musical backgrounds from Havana to Melbourne and many places in between. Join Ania and Romy for this special piano-ramic show at Open Studio, a joyous celebration of music inspired by lands of many colours.
Romy Hernandez:
Romy Hernandez Carbo was born in Havana, Cuba and began to study classical piano at the age of 9. She graduated from the National School of Arts in 2001 and spent the next 8 years working and performing as a classical pianist in Cuba and Panama. In 2009 Romy moved to Melbourne and it was around this time that she discovered a passion for composition and improvisation.
Romy studied and graduated with honours from the Victorian College of the Arts in jazz and contemporary music under Andrea Keller and Barney McAll. Romy is currently doing Masters in Performance Teaching at the University of Melbourne.
Romy is one of the composers and arrangers in Ella Trinidad, an afro-cuban large ensemble that performs regularly in Melbourne and that released their debut album in early 2022. Romy’s compositions feature other bands like El Numero Perfecto and San Lazaro. She performs regularly around Melbourne with various bands and has played at WOMADelaide Festival, Port Fairy Festival and Queenscliff festival to name a few. Romy participated as a panelist in the Melbourne International Jazz Festival Congress in 2021.
Ania Reynolds:
Award-winning pianist and composer Ania Reynolds has performed on pianos all over the world, from Brussels airport to 8 metres in the air at the New Victory Theatre New York, and has been Musical Director for the likes of Circus Oz and Yothu Yindi and the Treaty Project. An established soundtrack composer who has scored over fifty Australian theatre, circus and film works, her original piano compositions are evocative, cinematic and traverse many genres, from jazz to Latin to contemporary classical, reflecting her diverse influences as both a composer and performer. Ania’s great love of music from Latin America has seen her learn from Cuban pianists Denis Peralta and Yoel Diaz, and complete two artist residencies with cultural organisation Despina in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. A seasoned performer and storyteller, Ania’s theatrical solo piano performances are peppered with stories from the circus, life on the road and adventures in Latin America. Piano Carnival will feature music from her forthcoming solo piano album Além, inspired by her adventures in Brazil (and a couple in Cuba!).

Los Parceros play original music, continuing a folkloric tradition of their Latin American roots imbued with Pop music. They also play some of the best musical examples from Latin America and Spain, from Traditional/Folkolric music to more contemporary styles, using a variety of instruments such as spanish nylon string guitars, *cajon, ukuleles, guiro, *guacharaca, bongos and other percussion instruments. The band is made up of Abe Dunovits on string instruments and Julian Guzman on percussion. Originally from Argentina and Colombia respectively, both musicians create authentic music without the aid of electronic devices, just like you would see it and hear it on any street corner in Latin America. The sound of the cajon can be compared to that of a Drumkit, but softer. They blend seamelessly with Guitars. The 8 string Ukulele has a sound that is very close to a *Charango and to a *Cuban Tres guitar. Abe and Julian have both experience in a number of musical genres such as Latin, Rock and African. Let them take you on a journey of musical genres that include Cha Cha, Cuban Son, Cumbia, Merengue and Spanish Rumba among others.

We had a lovely gig at Open Studio on Friday between 6 & 8pm. Variety, singer, trio, beaut staff, happy customers - a real family feel where we came to all know each other. My kind of gig. Thanks to Lachlan Smith, Patrick Barton Grace, Mike Williams and Larry Kean, and special thanks to Susie Cloete who sang some standards so beautifully - and to all our audience who gave us their warm support. Thanks to Andrea Jordan for photos and for Abby Sharrock who came in with the punchlines to her grandpa's jokes!
