Thanks to everyone - the actors, writers and audience members - who contributed to another fun scratch night this week hosted by Elbow Room 👏

Eight playwrights sharing new works in development, each paired with a song that fuelled the writing in some way. It was incredible to watch bring these scripts come to life.

And a shout out to our 🪩 DJ Jof O’Farrell 🪩 who took us to the dancefloor afterwards.

Stay tuned to hear about future scratch nights at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.

For a non-verbal production, how might a dramaturg serve the team? We asked this of In Shadows dramaturg, Haneen Mahmood Martin:

“Working on this production has been an opportunity to further play with sharing a folklore that is extremely familiar to me through artforms that I grew up with, bolstered by the energy and rigour of the rest of the team. Dramaturgy isn’t solely a text-based practice. I’ve been utilising the many wonderful conversations I’ve had with the team to ensure that the performance that you see aligns with the world we’ve created.”

We can’t wait to see how this team transforms Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.

Choreographer and performer Janette Hoe lends her craft to retell a classic Southeast Asian folklore about the potianiak.

“For me, choreographing in this context begins from the inside out. As a Butoh and somatic practitioner, my process is about sensing and inhabiting a state of being.
Shadows excite me because they extend the imagination beyond what a physical body alone can do. They distort, but they also reveal. I feel in this work, shadows and Butoh go hand in hand — you can’t have one without the other, just like light and dark, conscious and unconscious. Working in this space has only deepened my fascination with the unexpected — in performance, and in life.” – Janette Hoe

We can’t wait to see Janette and these shadow puppets soon.

Visual artist Liang Luscombe, musician Isobel D’Cruz Barnes and dramaturg Haneen Mahmood Martin have been collecting different accounts of the pontianak folktale. Perhaps the most famous figure in Southeast Asian folklore, she is a woman who either died during childbirth or by the hands of her jealous husband, and someone who only haunts men or haunts both men and children.

Find out what happens in their version staged at Northcote Town Hall Arts Centre.
