Cim Sears - MOTHER, contemporises a journey of reclaiming and reimagining my First Nations mother’s stolen identity and how our lifelong relationship became a complexity of dreamlike scenarios, of startling discoveries and an extraordinary life together. Utilizing her unbridled passion for growing flowers and her love of nature, I have used images of her birth place in the Western Desert and of her flower farm in the South West to create a shocking contrast to her grim childhood in State institutions during the policies of child separation and State servitude. Archives, printmaking processes, video, ceramics and photographs manifests fragments of this life of survival. From the ashes of an abject beginning my mother’s spirit prevailed and she was able to miraculously make a life for herself against all odds. Her existence is invoked by a strangely beautiful but tumultuous folding of time where nothing can be pinned down and everything can be experienced at once. It is a witnessing and a kaleidoscope of her human experiences, sparks, deep silences, and the impulses of life.

Preparing the exhibition with artist , ‘Mother’, debuting at TUE 10 JUN.

Cim’s First Nations mother was taken as a baby during the WA Government’s enforcement of child removal and State servitude policies. Through her multidisciplinary practice, her mother’s love of wildflowers and connections to Country, Cim uncovers historical truths leading her to reclaim her mother’s narrative, fight for her human rights, her dignity and her stolen identity.

Donation Jewellery Books
The College recently received a donation of books specialising in jewellery from the studio of Sandy Hopkins. Sandy has been an experimental maker, using materials from paper to clay to metals, glass, and precious and semi-precious stones, with deep reverence for the traditional arts of many places.
She has exhibited in many JMGAWA (Jewellers & Metalsmiths Group of Australia WA) exhibitions and her works have been stocked by FOUND at the Fremantle Art Centre.
The collection bequeathed to NMTAFE includes a variety of publications, from technical to aesthetic and historical.
We hope the students at North Metropolitan TAFE can delve into the books and find inspiration for their practise.

Welcoming Azimah Fada

We are pleased to welcome our second Artist in Residence hosted in partnership with PICA, Azimah Fada!
During her residency, Azimah will research the similarities in cultural musical instruments in Australia and Indonesia to examine the connection between music and storytelling. In Indonesia, the sinrilik of Sulawesi is a string instrument used for passing and conveying political messages, religious beliefs, folklore and supernatural narratives. While in Western Australia, Azimah will be researching instruments used for similar cultural and social purposes.

ANGELA STEWART
// Memory: Forty Years of Making

Art Collective WA and North Metropolitan TAFE are proud to present a survey exhibition that charts the evolution of Angela Stewart’s practice. The exhibition features a range of painting, drawing and painted photography, including works from the North Metropolitan TAFE Art Collection.
Drawing inspiration from Italian Renaissance art, the artist delves into the intricacies of historical portraiture, peeling back layers to reveal the essence of artistic doubt. Through meticulous rendering and exploration of traditional elements, her pieces weave imaginary narratives, inviting viewers to decipher the forensic trail of each work.
Angela Stewart's oeuvre, held in major collections across Australia, showcases her mastery of technique and enduring dedication to the craft.
Exhibition runs 1 – 23 May 2024

Mozaffari is an emerging artist now based in Boorloo/Perth. Her work investigates the varied nature she has discovered as a new migrant, as well as studies of Afghan women and children from her home.

Her first show, this exhibition provides a platform for Mozaffari’s paintings and works on paper, and is a celebration of both her body of work and the journey to get here.

Exhibition dates: Friday 19 - Saturday 20 April.

The NMTAFE Art Collection showcases works by acclaimed local, national, and international artists most often associated with the College, dating back to 1910.
Recently we acquired 23rd of May by our 2023 Graduate Jessica Parra, a photograph aiming to deconstruct the barriers limiting expressions of affection among older individuals, and intending to celebrate these tender moments in a manner akin to how we cherish the exuberance of youth.
Born in Colombia in 1988, Jessica embarked on a journey five years ago driven by her passions for travel, exploring diverse languages, and immersing herself in different cultures, which led her to leave her home country. This work forms part of a body of works shown as part of her graduation portfolio.
What a joy it was to have Linda and Richard McKellar, the subjects of the series that Jessica completed visit us at Gallery Central recently.

Sneak peek at the new entrance happenings at Gallery Central.

We invited artists from Overtime Design to experiment with type, sparking conversations around place, mark making, and communication.

The Overtime Design team was launched in 2016 by Luke O’Donohue, Andrew Reid - an NMTAFE alumni - and Sam Bloor.

The design work at Gallery Central incorporates a selection of letters from Andrew’s contribution to the 36 days of type project; a worldwide design challenge that takes place each year.

It has been hugely inspirational to get up close and personal to these letters which are all hand painted and larger than life size!

If you are near 12 Aberdeen Street, pop in to see the work.
