Bilya Koort Boodja

Bilya Koort Boodja Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge Tourism - Development of a regional tourism focal point for culture in Northam and the Avon.

The Bilya Koort Boodja Centre of Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge is located in the Shire of Northam on the foreshore of the Avon River in Northam’s CBD. It was developed as a regional tourist attraction offering an interactive educational experience that recognises the rich Aboriginal and environmental presence in the Avon River region. The Centre will protect, celebrate and share the

culture of the Nyoongar peoples and highlight innovative land management practices that draws upon the knowledge of the land’s traditional custodians. The Bilya Koort Boodja Centre offers an opportunity to better reflect the Aboriginal culture in the region and encourages an understanding of how to better develop our local environment. The Centre has a range of objectives and their achievement will bring a series of benefits to the community. Social Cohesion - Recognizing the crossover of environmental interests and their interpretation through Aboriginal culture will encourage integration within our community and region. Community - Providing a focal point for people of various cultural orientations to come together with common interests to understand and respect difference within our community. Economic - Providing opportunities cultural based business opportunities in and around the Centre.

Thirty years on, Reconciliation Week encourages all Australians to be a part of sharing history, stories and culture, and to strengthen relationships between communities for the benefit and futures of all.

🖤💛❤️ 26th May; National Sorry Day

Today marks the 29th anniversary of the ‘Bringing them Home’ report, which shared the truths and stories of the Stolen Generation with all Australian people.
Recognising this date and its significance is an integral part of community healing, and is an opportunity for all to learn about and acknowledge the impact this part of our history still has on those involved, and future generations.

Today we remember our fallen warriors, and honour the courage and sacrifice of all who served.

He said goodbye to family
Sailing aboard a ship to hell
His mates were in the trenches
With the mud, the blood, the smell.

Like many who were with him
Small towns from where they came
To give themselves for freedom
For their country here no shame.

They stood side by side as equals
Regardless of their skin
United they were brothers
As Fritz fire kept them in.

Sgt Smith got wounded
Bandaged, and as he turned away
Machine gun fired and hit him hard
And took his life that day.

His Mother received a letter
To say he won't return
They sent home all that Smithy had
Only then she learned:

Not her sons belongings
A different soldier boy
The sadness heavy in her heart
For another's pride and joy.

His brother then decided
To face this bloody war
Fight for King and Country
And all that it stood for.

Before he had to board that ship
War's final days they came
Boys returned to their small towns
Though their lives were not the same.

We will remember all of them
Courageous brave and strong
A land so far away from home
Where none of them belong.

In their hearts and spirit
Dreamtime be
The Aboriginal soldier
Who gave all for you and me.
