This week we played with different ways to start and finish a song, with an emphasis on "play" to add creativity and musicality to your dancing. We also learned two dips as great ways to end a song - including the side dip and the spinning Koala dip.

As always with any dip make sure it's safe! So don't do dips with people you don't know, and only do the dip if absolutely everything goes perfectly - it's always better to abort than push through and risk someone getting hurt.

Next week we have beginners at 7pm, and our monthly all-levels class on Slow Balboa at 8pm - see you there!

Lost property! If these are your headphones let us know & you can pick them up next week :-)

At Swing Patrol, there is nothing we like better than nerding out about dance technique, and this week's Level 2 class was a deep dive into the concept of "elastic or dymamic frame". We did a bunch of exercises using stretchy bands so that we could see the stretch which helps us to visualise and understand what we are aiming for. Everyone's swingouts were so much better at the end of the class!

Want to fine tune your dancing, and improve your technique? Come along to our Level 2/Intermediate class at 8pm every Tuesday!

People often ask “how can I be a better social dancer?”.

Learning moves and improving your technique are both great, but I think the best advice I can give to both leaders and followers, is to listen.

Listen to the music - what are the musicians doing and how can you embody that in your dancing? Jazz is all about improvisation, and the great Jazz musicians are masters at this, with endless ideas that you can learn from.

What is your partner doing? How are they moving, how are they exploring the music and how can you do that together?

We call it partner dancing for a reason... No role is more important than the other and both are crucial, because we are working together as a team to create the dance, and each dance is unique.

This post is a beautiful explanation from Vicci and Adamo (they are Blues dancers, but everything they say applies to Lindy Hop as well). Enjoy & we’ll see you on the dance floor 🙂

For tonight‘s class, we will be using some props! If anybody happens to have one of these elastic stretchy bands that you use for Pilates or Physio, please bring it along tonight (don’t bother buying one, but if you have one already, then that would be great).

We have several to share, but a few more for the class would be even better.
Thanks and see you tonight :-)

Come and learn the classic Shim Sham this Tuesday at Swing Patrol North Sydney at our monthly all-levels class which is suitable for beginners, as well as old hands wanting to brush up. We'll also add some fun variations if you want to take it up a notch!

The Shim Sham is a famous solo jazz routine that you'll often see danced at socials - the song will start and people will rush to the floor to perform together! Solo jazz dancing is not only fun, but it also makes your partnered dancing better, gives you more stylings to play with and is a great way to really connect to the music.

Do one class or do both, the choice is yours.
7.00pm - regular level 1 swing class
8.00pm - special Shim Sham class
