Whale Trivia Whale Trivia is a fun quiz night at the North Strathfield Hotel each Tuesday and Stone Restaurant at Barnwell Park GC each Thursday!

Also available for private, corporate or charity shows as well as public speaking and presentation training. Whale Trivia began in 2004 as a one off show on Melbourne Cup day at the Bald Rock Hotel which then became a monthly show. Soon, locals demanded a weekly show and since 2005 Whale Trivia has been a regular event each week virtually all year round. These days, I do two shows a week:
- Tuesdays at Cookies Lounge Bar, North Strathfield - 7pm (app.) Since 2011
- Thursdays at the Bald Rock Hotel, Rozelle - 7:30pm (app.) Since 2004

About the show:
The show consists of two halves of 20 questions with a weekly jackpot questionnaire at the end. It usually runs for 1 and a half to 2 hours. There are regular voucher prizes for the teams that come 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 2nd last (that's right, 2nd last, you've got to at least try!) Plus there is my patented (not actually patented) "Special Bonus Floating Prize" that could go to any of the other ranked teams on the night. Plus there are other chocolate and voucher giveaways during the night! About the host:
Simon 'Simmo' Whale has spent almost his entire working life in some form of customer service. In 2002 he began hosting the weekly trivia show for FAME Trivia at the Commercial Hotel in East Balmain (now The East Village Hotel). But, due to his popularity and professionalism, that one night soon became 2, then 3 and once Whale Trivia began, 4 nights a week. Some other venues he hosted for a length of time are; the North Annandale Hotel (for FAME Trivia), the Mortdale Hotel (for FAME Trivia), Bar Cleveland, Surrey Hills ('09-'10), The Pine Inn, Burwood ('17-'21) and The Dry Dock Hotel ('08-'21), Balmain. His association with FAME Trivia came to an end in 2008 and since then he has worked almost purely as Whale Trivia.

At a venue I know very well which even features my name on a champions board... possibly twice if they ever get updated! 😜

It will be a night dedicated to quizzing and fun Whale Trivia style... but with a touch of class. 🤵🏻🤵🏻‍♀️

Whale Trivia at Stone Restaurant at Barnwell Park Golf Club & Pro Shop every Thursday... a match 20 years in the making! ⛳❤️🤓

Barnwell Park Golf Club is at
551 Lyons Road West, Five Dock (Canada Bay)
There is a dedicated car park plus plenty of on-street parking.
Bus route 502 goes straight past the front door.

It's a nice place! 🙂
We will be in the main restaurant area overlooking Canada Bay. 🏞️
Much better than being crammed into small rooms, relegated to back areas, and being treated as second rate patrons. 😡

{ - Road Rage by Catatonia - 1998 - Road Rage was the second best charting song for Catatonia in their native UK, but thanks to it reaching #40 in Australia, it was their best charting internationally. While the song itself is about advances in technology, the songs name is not. The name was inspired by a news story at the time where a woman had murdered her fiance but told police it was a stranger in a road rage incident.}

The heavens opened up on us last night but thankfully we were inside the North Strathfield Hotel with a lot of quizzers having a ball... apart from the stragglers who came in late... either soaking wet or with a smug smile and an umbrella!

The quiz was a tight affair but right at the end "No Signal Mojito" 🚫📺🤬🍸 were forced to pay more attention to the quiz as the pay TV signal kept dropping out, thus they scored a 2 point victory.
A timely visit from some extras saw "Pegasus" 🧚🐴🧚 almost keep up with their fellow half-time leaders, but eventually they happily settled for second.
The podium was completed by "Live Executions, Now Proudly Sponsored By Whale Trivia" 🎥🪓😱👉🏻🐳 in third place and given my new sponsorship deal, my place may soon be in jail!
They certainly like to explore the various finishing positions on the Whale Trivia ladder, and this week "Q Is For Quiz" ❓❓❓🤔🥳 continued their journey winning the Special Bonus Floating Prize!

My work at the North Strathfield Hotel may definitely be in question after I got beat in the Jackpot once again by my recent nemesis team. We only got to $150 in vouchers again and a freak piece of knowledge from one team member saw "American Apparel Tobasco" 🇺🇸👗🧥🌶️🌶️ win another Jackpot. Please note that hitmen/hitwomen/hitpeople have been hired to take care of the situation, so if you don't see Richard in the coming weeks, you'll know why! Next week (hopefully) the Jackpot restarts at $100 in vouchers. 💰

{ - It's Not Unusual by Tom Jones - 1965 - The song was originally meant for Sandie Shaw but she thought the session musicians demo recording of it was so good, that it should be the single. That session musician was Tom Jones and 'It's Not Unusual' went #1 in the UK, #3 in Australia and #10 in the US. It quickly became Tom's signature song and has been covered a multitude of times... including by NZ actor Temuera Morrison... that's right, Jenga Fett, Jake 'Cook the man some f'n eggs' Heke, Boba Fett, Aquaman's dad... yep he released an album called 'Tem' in 2014 which included a cover of 'It's Not Unusual'!}

It didn't really look it at times with a team or two failing to show for their booking, but we had a decent-double-figure-team-number crowd at the North Strathfield Hotel.

Top of the table at the break were two teams, but it was "Bloody Sydney Trains!" 🤬🚂🚃🚂🚃🛠️ who came out on top... eventually... once everyone arrived...
Hey guess what everyone, "It's Naomie's Birthday Tomorrow (Tabasco)" 🤓🎂🎁👉🏻🌶️🌶️! And they finished in second place to kick off her celebrations early, however the 'Who Am I?' win was the real start!
Sheer joy and happiness erupted from "Close, But No Bonsai" 🤏🏻🚫🪴 when it was revealed they finished in third place, equalling their best ever finish (but there might be some debate over that).
It was a bit devastating that the Irish ring-in's in "Shamrocks" ☘️☘️☘️ didn't help with the Irish question, but that all faded to the background when they won the Special Bonus Floating Prize!

Thankfully, the Jackpot did not go off and so it climbs next week to $150 in vouchers. 💰

{ - Happy House by Siouxsie And The Banshees - 1980 - When Siouxsie Sioux was 19, she and her friends were fans of an unsigned band called the S*x Pistols. When someone pulled out of a punk festival organised by Malcolm McLaren, Siouxsie asked her good friend and bass player Steve Severin if they should fill the spot. With borrowed musicians, including Sid Vicious on drums, they did a 20 minute punk interpretation of The Lord's Prayer. They went on to form Siouxsie And The Banshees after they were asked to perform again and became one of the most influential bands of the post punk and new age era. 'Happy House' marked a big change in the band's sound and is one of the 5 top 20 singles the band had over their 20 year run.}

Back to it kids!
A very nice, very friendly, very big crowd were in the North Strathfield Hotel last night which made me quite happy.

Unfortunately though, I have to do the rundown now...
Unable to let sleeping dogs lie, "F**k Castle Wolfenstein" 🖕🏻🏰💻 channelled their hatred of that particular subject and turned it into a one point win!
After a lot of recent attendances for birthdays and other joyous celebrations "Simon's St**fy Subduers" 🤓🍆🥄 more than did their job as they finished 2nd... they finished second in the quiz that is!
And making reference to the temper tantrum we we subjected to by a family leaving at the start of the night, "I Enjoy Making Children WHALE!" 😈👦🏻😭 did indeed enjoy it as they finished third.
They failed to correctly listen to my spiel at the start of the night, but after they corrected the number in the second half, "And In 8th Place And Winner Of The Special Bonus Floating Prize!!" 🖐🏻✌🏻☝🏻😂❓🎀🎁 finished in 8th place and won the Special... well you know the rest!

And finally, 💸 putting my career in jeopardy, 💸 the Jackpot 💸 went off for the second week in a row. 💸 I am losing the Jackpot battle so I will need to pick up my game after "WAT (Wet Ass Tabasco)" 💦🍑🌶️🌶️ won yet another Jackpot, this time $100 in vouchers! I couldn't beat the talented multi generational set-up they have so next week, if management allows, the Jackpot will re-start at $100 and I have to get to work! 💰

Lots of birthdays, lots of people, lots of prizes, lots of great service, lots of picking on the host, lots of the host having funny jokes and comebacks... well maybe not lots on the last one. So much was going on at the North Strathfield Hotel it feels like two weeks worth of stuff... in fact, seeing as though I missed last week's report and this week's is a day late, it IS two weeks worth of stuff!!!

Let's start in the bleachers with the rundown from Tuesday the 15th
A big birthday bash for the former bandmate of Vic Vaseline set an ominous tone of joy for the night. But it was a solid performance from "Magic Mario" 🔮👨🏻 that saw them finally get back to the top of the podium. It must have been that warm up at the recent Concord Hospital 85th Anniversary Trivia Night!
Ahead of a possible upcoming divorce, "Rivalry Mojito" 🐓💥🦈🍸 came in second place.
"A Medley Of Meddlers" 👩‍👩‍👦‍👦🤪 completed the podium just two points behind the winners.
And the "Donut Smashers" 🍩🔨 smashed the donuts and also took home the Special Bonus Floating Prize!
The Jackpot did not go off and would climb to $150 in vouchers. 💰

This week, on Tuesday the 22nd of September, we had more birthdays and a very welcome visit from an extremely happy group of veteran quizzers, that are infamous for controversial, or should I say 'salty' 🍄‍🟫, team names, and who hold the record as the only team to ever play 5 nights of Whale Trivia in one week! It was awesome to catch up again!

But, we also had a quiz, and the threat of divorce never eventuated... maybe because the divorce lawyer was tripped up on the way (not because he was dropping crap all over the place, lost one of his main players in the opening minutes and just generally was below par, nope, none of that!)... but this week it was a double birthday celebration and victory for "September Birthday Mojito" 📅🥳🎂🍸!
A very annoying "Treaty 'Yeah' Tabasco" 📜👍🏻🌶️🌶️ were back on the podium this week scoring second place... more on why they are annoying later.
And picking up the final podium slot was "Free Ed Sheeran!" ✊🏻🧑🏻‍🦰🎸 who are probably now being dropped by venue sponsors everywhere!
Entering the halls of legends, "Strange Strangers In Paradise" 🤔🤷🏻‍♂️🏖 were back and yet again, won the Special Bonus Floating Prize! Who said 'middle of the road' never got you anything!!!

But then we also had the 💸 $150 💸 voucher Jackpot and the annoying "Treaty 'Yeah' Tabasco" 📜👍🏻🌶️🌶️ were obviously not partying hard enough in 2019 💸 as they remembered everything 💸 and scored yet another 7 from 7 💸! I'm going to get in so much trouble from management for letting the jackpot go off for the 4th time in 8 weeks! But it means we start at $100 in vouchers next week!💰

{ - Heathens by Twenty-One Pilots - 2016 - Twenty-One Pilots were asked to provide a song for the movie 'Su***de Squad' and 'Heathens' is what they provided. Lead singer Tyler Joseph stated - "As I was writing the song I was like, I want this song to be a Twenty One Pilots song first... Even though the themes in the movie inspired the beginning of it, as the lyrics came together, and as the song came together, I realized, this was our song."}

A couple of late additions got us to 10 teams last night at the North Strathfield Hotel full of people keen for a lot of fun!

Hopefully everyone did have fun, because as far as the quiz was concerned it was a spicy night! "Tabasco-toa" 🌶️🌶️🌋 were a point clear at the break but then ran away to win by a whopping 6 points!
A bit of "Sauce On The Side" 🍅🫗🍝👉🏻 got the mustard when they finished in second place.
Then a couple of points further back we had an underpersonned "Friday Morning Football Mojito" 🌅🏈🍸 complete the podium.
A very happy "Kills For The Pils" ⚰️👉🏻💊 ended up being the lucky team to score the Special Bonus Floating Prize.

The Jackpot also went off to the extremely powerful "Tabasco-toa" 🌶️🌶️🌋 earning them a lot of nasty looks! Next week we see the Jackpot restart at $100 in vouchers! 💰

{ - I Love You But by Friendly - 2000 - this was the fourth single for Australian DJ, Friendly. It resulted in, just, being his highest charting single reaching #42 in the Australian charts.}

Well that was a bit of a nightmare... not that anything went wrong, but when you were as sick as I was and you forget to take your tablets before going to work... you are going to to suffer! And suffer I did. Sorry to all and sundry at the North Strathfield Hotel last night for not being my usual almost healthy self. Let's hope I kick it before next week!

As for the quiz, well they were almost perfect in the first half and "Damaged Monitor Mojito" 🥊🖥️🍸 did just enough to stay there and claim victory!
Maybe it was the confusion in working out where to write their answers rather than missing an obvious answer that saw "Yeah Mate" 👍🏻👷🏻 finish in second place.
It was "A Small Picture Of A Fish" 🤏🏻🖼️🐟 that was the best of the rest taking home 3rd prize.
For several teams it is the prize that matters, and this week "Bowl Of Chips" 🥣🍟 got the chicken salt and tomato sauce when they won the Special Bonus Floating Prize. (please note that neither chicken salt nor tomato sauce were part of the prize... I was trying to be funny, joking about their name... sorry)

The Jackpot was bigger this week, thanks to the subject, but was back to the starting point thanks to going off last week. It nearly went off again this week with one team getting 6 out of 7 but that means it starts the climb again to $150 in vouchers next week. 💰

{ - Still Into You by Paramore - 2012 - Initially reluctant to have a 'girl' as lead singer, Paramore was formed in the early 2000's by a group of early to mid-teenagers and that 'girl', Hayley Williams, has been the only band member to remain throughout the entirety of the bands life. 'Still Into You' was a departure from their previous heavier rock sound to a more light pop-rock sound and it proved to be the bands most commercially successful song that even reached #5 in Australia.}

A big crowd at the North Strathfield Hotel last night saw some close competition, a lot of fun, and even a well timed joke that got a range of reactions, all the way from groans to applause... well one person clapped!

2 teams tied for the lead at the break... 3 teams a point behind... and the rest right on their heels... it was going to be a close finish!
And it was "On The Buses" 🚏🚌🚌 back for their latest visit who climbed past the early leaders to claim a one point victory!
It is that time of year, and it always bring about a theme amongst team names and it was no different for "Menus Change, But Tabasco Is Forever ❤️" 🍛👉🏻🍔👉🏻🥗☝🏻🌶️🌶️❤️ as they also climbed from the 2nd place tie but just not as well, landing in second place.
The third place team, "Cheer, Cheer The Red And The White. Honour By Day And St*****rs By Night" 🙌🏻👏🏻🟥⬜🙏🏻🌞💃🏻🌛 also climbed up from a point behind slipping into third place.
The most important and most popular prize, the Special Bonus Floating Prize, could have been anyone's as it was so close but in the end "Thomas And Enemies" 🚂😡🤬👊🏻 were victorious in that fight.

The Jackpot 💸 was at 💸 $200 💸 in vouchers and it went off... 💸💸 with a rather surprising winner! 💸 Apparently it was team effort, 💸 with many different contributors, 💸 but "On The Buses" 🚏🚌🚌 knew enough things relating to J-Lo to get 7 from 7! That means we start again next week at $100 in vouchers! 💰

{ - Let's Get It Started by The Black Eyed Peas - 2004 - Originally a track on the band's third studio album 'Elephunk', titled 'Let's Get Re****ed'. The record label was lobbied by a group advocating for people with disabilities. and the label asked the band to re-record the song using less offensive lyrics, which they did, and thus 'Let's Get It Started' was created. It gained airplay and coverage once it was cleaned up and was released as a single the following year.}

We just managed to get to double figures in regards to teams last night at the North Strathfield Hotel which was just enough to counter the group having a long lunch that was still going on at one non-playing table.

It was an interesting first half, mainly from my point of view, as we had one team with a perfect score, another just 1 point behind, but then it was another 4 points back to the rest of the pack who were separated by just three points. So it was definitely a two horse horse for the win, but the rest was wide open.
It wasn't all clear sailing for them but the top two did enough, equalled each others score, and that saw "Yeah Mate!" 👍🏻👷🏻 not screw things up this time and take home the win.
Unable to find those extra couple of points "Vote For Pauline Hanson To Slash The Price Of Tabasco Ciggies" 🗳️🎃💸🌶️🌶️🚬 had to settle for second place.
The battle for the final podium step was very close indeed and, despite missing half their regular team,"East City Westmen" 👉🏻🧭🏙️👈🏻🧑🏻👨🏻👨🏻‍🦱 might have finished 3-points back but for the first time ever they finished on the podium and were in seventh heaven... or was it 3rd heaven?
The Special Bonus Floating Prize also went to a team missing half their players but I'm pretty sure the rest of "The Cav's" 👱🏻‍♀️👨🏻‍🦳 will get to sample the sweet prize.

The Jackpot was also a sweet subject but with the best being 6 out of 7, it means it climbs again next week to $200 in vouchers. 💰💰
