✨ SOUTENU TOWARDS THE BARRE ✨

One of ballet's most useful turning steps!

A soutenu means "sustained" or "supported" and is often used to change direction smoothly while staying beautifully lifted.

A few things to think about:

✔ Bring your feet together tightly before you turn
✔ Keep your weight centred over both legs
✔ Grow taller through your spine as you rotate
✔ Turn your head with confidence - don't leave it behind!
✔ Finish with your heels lowered and your turnout maintained

For beginners, don't worry about turning quickly. Focus on staying balanced, coordinated, and moving as one piece.

The goal isn't speed - it's control, placement, and elegance. 🌷

A few gentle reminders:

✓ Keep your arms fluid and moving at all times.
✓ Keep space between your elbow and ear when your arms are lifted into 4th or 5th position.
✓ Make sure your toes never point directly to the front.
✓ Turn out your legs from the top of your hips, rather than from the knee down.
✓ Keep your energy calm and match your vibe with the music
✓ Enjoy! That's the key to beautiful dancing 🥰

Never underestimate the power of a plié 🥰

Pliés help warm the body, improve turnout, build strength through the legs and feet, and teach dancers how to move with control and coordination.

Things to think about in your pliés 👇

• Knees tracking over the toes
• Turnout rotated from the top of your hips
• Heels grounded in demi-pliés and in grand pliés in 2nd
• A long, lifted spine
• Equal weight through both feet
• Keeping smooth-like movement with your arms at all times

They may look simple, but they are the foundation of so much of what we do in ballet 🩰

A ballet waltz in two different speeds... 🩰

The slower tempo gives you time to focus on the details of each movement, refine your technique, and enjoy the transitions between each step.

The faster tempo challenges you to think quickly, respond to the music, and maintain your technique while moving with greater flow and confidence.

Both have their benefits, and both can teach us something different as dancers.
