Stillwaters Storytelling Network

Stillwaters Storytelling Network Stillwaters is an all-gender and inter cultural international storytelling network that promotes and We really do not dictate how people tell their story. Why?

At Stillwaters, "storytelling" is not just about the spoken word or the written word. We understand "storytelling" to include every medium of expression from poetry, novels, short stories, academic papers to singing, dance, visual art, fine art, photography ... and so on. Well, it's their story. And ... not many African women are telling their own stories in their own voices, not many people are h

earing about and responding directly to the issues that really interest us, as "African women". So, as a collective, we are on a mission to turn this situation around. We just want to let you in on what really interests us and to tell you how we see the world. How? Well, our stories there, we just have not taken the time, as African-descended women to "uncover" our stories and discover our interests. So that's what we do: we uncover the stories, then we document what emerges. So, this year, we are writing short stories, taking photos, collaborating with dancers, performing spoken word and producing visual art. You should check out the photos on our website

www.stillwaterswomen.org

What kind of stories do we tell? Well, we only share stuff we have personally experienced or observed. Life is always interesting when you find that, suddenly, you live in between several cultures ... Generally, African women who have migrated from their countries of birth tend to see things in their new homeland somewhat differently from those born and raised in the new motherland. So, you can expect Stillwaters to present urban, contemporary and cutting-edge storytelling. This means that we ONLY tell modern stories about our current experiences. So, you are not African descended and you are not a woman? That's okay, you can still join in the fun... Yes, really! Okay ... We DO have our "African woman time". Nobody is allowed to intrude in "African woman time". We need our space so we can figure ourselves out. BUT once we are done, we are always eager to share and play with everyone - whatever your gender and whatever your age. Yeah ... we know ... black feminists have warned that opening up black spaces to "white", "male" or "nationalist" voices always leads to a colonisation ... We are aware of this ... but we are going to trust that you are aware of this too and that you will be very conscious of the energy you bring into our space and, above all, respect the sacredness of our stories ... if you don't ... we'll ask/tell you to leave. So what can you expect from our African female storytellers? Well, we always tell our stories from the heart and with heart. We believe that a story shared from the heart and with heart will create deep and lasting bonds between us (all the really different personalities within in our collective) and between us and our entire Australian community and ... everyone in the world. Most importantly, we TRUST YOU TO RESPECT OUR STORIES ... that includes copyright ...

Old design I did. Almost two years ago. ❤️ our children reflect our country and their belonging, they will always belong, we will always belong. Poem is from 2016

How do we Speak to brick walls
that Want us to scream
so they can Laugh in our faces
how do we Fit all
that haunts in our Dreams
into such Harsh social spaces
white australia will Tell us
we Don't know, what we do
they will Always fail to
address
the Cause of distress
they won't see the truth
most don't want to
they will silence and Shame
whoever Dare Call their name
they will Discredit and make Claims
fill our Throats with Sand and Disband our senses
Senselessly
Again and again
Relentlessly
they see Nothing of Sacredness and Never could see
they will put Blood to our Eyes and call Us Blinded by colour
As they put Death to our Sisters and Brothers
and still call Us wild
The Most Dangerous Thing To Be Right Now
Is An Aboriginal Child:
A Murri Jarjum feeling Deadly with their Mob
A little Torres Strait bubba taking every chance
To show their elders how they do their ancient dance
A Noongar baby, with skin like his Pop
A little Nungah sissy that's Smart Strong, Deadly And pretty
A Koori son, who Smiles at Everyone
A Yolngu daughter, achieving her Goals with Self belief
A young Palawa brother learning Ancient Traditions in his tribal country
A Koorie teen, connected to her people and Her Dreams
Our children Undefined by Any negative conditions
defying All preconceived Suspicions
Rising as Seeds grow, Blooming in their Brilliance
Rising from Oppression through Concrete
So you can Call it what you Want, whatever Suits Ya,
white australia’s Not afraid of its Black History, but of its
Black Future

My lovelies! I'm feeling a deep desire to host a writing and performance workshop.

I've spent 6 years exploring the topic of identity and belonging as a writer and performer. During this time, I've had the honour of performing these pieces at Federation Square's Light In Winter Festival, Dandenong, Zimbabwe's Harare International Festival of the Arts, Melbourne's Emerging Writer's Festival, Melbourne's Big West Festival and in Denmark at CopenOpen - Copenhagen's leading open mic slam poetry night. Before I took to the stage, I studied the topic of identity and belonging at university. I even wrote an Honours thesis about it, using Afrikan literature as source material. Yeah, I know. I'm passionate about this theme and I love to learn and share what I learn.

As you all know, I recently returned from an amazing workshop tour in Denmark where the theme of the workshops was "Speaking Identity". And, I explored the theme in some other form during workshops I facilitated and co-ordinated in Zimbabwe in 2013. It's time that Australia got some workshop love!

I'd love to explore the topic of identity and belonging with you and to share some Afrikan-inspired writing and performance techniques and devices with you. What are your thoughts? If you're keen, definitely let me know what suits you by briefly answering these 3 questions in a private message sent to my page BY 5PM AEST ON NOVEMBER 10, 2015 ... www.facebook.com/sistazai

QUESTIONS
1. Is January or February or March 2016 a good time for you for a 12 hour course spread over 4 sessions?

2. Which days of the week suit you? Can you do more than 1 day a week?

3. What times of the day suit you?

4. What's your best contact? Phone or email?

The investment is $600 full and $560 concession and $0 for anyone who hosted 2 or more open mic sessions at the Pan Afrikan Poets Cafe.

I will only host this workshop once (maybe twice) a year and only desire to have a group of 6 - 8 people each time. I really love to work with small groups.

This workshop is designed for all levels and experience and cultural backgrounds. The performance and writing techniques are all Afrikan-inspired. There is selection process and there will be a formal application and interview. Before you start to judge yourself out of this adventure: this is a selective process because I'm super keen to work with committed, enthusiastic (introvert and extrovert) people and will conduct interviews simply to enable a group dynamic that will work well and get the most for everyone involved. So please share this news with your network. I encourage you all to apply. I'm excited. Let's do this!
