Dance Massive

Dance Massive Australia’s largest festival of contemporary dance. Join our movement from 12-24 March 2019. Most importantly, it’s time to dance. How? Embrace it.

The Dance Massive consortium: Arts House, Dancehouse and Malthouse Theatre in association with Ausdance Victoria are pleased to bring you Dance Massive 2017. Now more than ever, it’s time to engage and connect, to question everything. Dance Massive offers you that possibility – a chance to rediscover your belief in the joyous and the extraordinary privilege of feeling alive. By engaging with the w

ork of people who with focus, skill and fierce imagination, enable you to know yourself better, and to see the world through fresh eyes. For this fifth chapter of Dance Massive, we have unearthed and commissioned work that is adventurous, deeply mythical, exuberantly fun, confidently abstract and at times, hilariously ambiguous. Over thirteen days you can immerse in the full spectrum of choreographic forms, including an ambitious new project from our state dance company Chunky Move, a world premiere from rising choreographic star and Bundjalong /Yaegl woman Mariaa Randall, and intricate work by long time experimenter, Sandra Parker. Dance Massive V is choreography at its best: as theatre, as action, as communal gathering and as form that is creating its future. Dance Massive will take you onto the streets, out of the black box and into the unknown. It’s definitely worth buying a ticket or four. It’s time to dance and dance massive. Now more than ever. Dance Massive exists as the concurrent programming and scheduling of contemporary dance works and events across three Melbournevenues. These venues, Arts House, Malthouse Theatre and Dancehouse are centrally located in Melbourne and have an established history of programming new contemporary dance works for both Melbourne and Australian audiences. During Dance Massive, the consortium partners come together to shares resources, collaborate and promote our seasons and programs under the Dance Massive banner. Angela Conquet, Dancehouse

As you may have heard, Dance Massive won’t be going ahead in March 2021. We are taking this moment to consider the next steps for dance in a changed world. And so, Arts House and Dancehouse, Melbourne Australia, with support from Creative Victoria, have appointed four independent arts practitioners — Mariaa Randall, Luke George, Priya Srinivasan and Tam Nguyen — to lead a community co-design and explore the potential of a dedicated contemporary dance festival in Melbourne.

The Co-Design team will be listening to your input via an online survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/AHDHPUSH

Thank you for making Dance Massive, massive.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Dance Massive 2019 was a truly monumental celebration of the joy of dance. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
We awed at the murmuration created by 400 dancers at Birrarung Marr, witnessed a celebration of urban dance culture with a battle on the streets of Melbourne, whizzed between black boxes to see as much extraordinary dance as possible, we conversed, discussed, shared, mingled, but most importantly, we danced.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
This year, we delivered the most ambitious and most rewarding Dance Massive in the festival's history and we owe all of our artists, supporters, and you, the audience, a massive, heart-felt thank you.⁣⁣⁣

See you in 2021. ⁣

The countdown for SIMULCAST has begun!

Come down to Birrarung Marr at 3pm or 4:30pm to witness hundreds of young, old, trained and untrained dancers work together to create a murmuration.

SIMULCAST is a solo for celebrated Australian dancer James O’Hara, supported by a local cast of 400.

Watch as one moving body multiplies into hundreds.

"You Animal, You by Force Majeure, is the yet another work in this year’s program that sits somewhere outside of the traditional boundaries of dance. It is a menacing, vicious work of physicality, it’s toying with social taboos is a challenging and unrelenting experience which leaves audiences gasping for air. The swaths that the performance cuts ‘in between’, create paths deeper into darkness. In all You Animal you leaves very little room for argument- this is a great performance."
