Roche AM (1930 – 2013) was a devoted collector of antiques and fine art. Based in North Adelaide, South Australia he left his amazing collection in the home in which he lived as a legacy in trust for the Australian people. 'Salon des Refusés 2026' comprises of 36 portraits and 20 landscapes that were selected for quality, diversity, humour and experimentation, and examine a wide range of contemporary art practices. Jacqueline Hennessy's work, 'Eliza', draws on the language of photography while quietly unsettling its claim to fully capture the subject. The figure emerges through thin layers of raw umber, at once precise and dissolving. Eliza’s gaze too slips beyond the viewer, withholding direct exchange. In honor of International Dog Day yesterday, we're taking a look back at 'Best in Show 2025: Australian Photographic Dog Prize'

If you’ve taken a tour of Fermoy House, you’ll know that David Roche was a devoted dog breeder and renowned dog show judge. His passion for dogs is woven throughout the House, with an exceptional collection of canine art and his awards on display.

Last year, 'Best in Show 2025' brought this remarkable part of David’s story to life, celebrating his legacy and our enduring love of our four-legged companions. We’re delighted to announce that this exhibition will return in 2027! More details will be announced later this year, in the meantime, start capturing those award-winning photographs!

Last chance to see 'Collections'

Don't miss SALA 2026 finalist and fibre artist, Fiona McIntosh's exquisite exhibition, 'Collections' currently on display in the Roman Room.

Made from loose wool fibre and the labour-intensive process of needle felting, McIntosh creates illusionary surfaces that are both beguiling and unsettling. By giving physical form to the unseen, she encourages tactile encounters that invite close looking, curiosity and a sense of wonder for life beyond our view.

Last Thursday, we celebrated the official opening of 'Salon des Refusés 2026', with special guest Jane Watters, Director of SH Ervin Gallery, joining us to officially open the exhibition. Featuring more than 50 remarkable portrait and landscape paintings by some of Australia's leading contemporary artists, Salon des Refusés offers Adelaide audiences a rare opportunity to experience this high calibre national showcase, and give art lovers the first opportunity outside Sydney to experience these remarkable works up close.

Known as the popular 'alternative' to the esteemed Archibald and Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, this exhibition showcases work not selected for the official exhibition, but recognised for their quality, diversity and experimentation. Salon des Refusés has become one of our most anticipated exhibitions, and this year's selection is no exception. Experience Salon des Refusés at David Roche Gallery until 24 October.
