The Heart of the Portrait ✨

Work on the portrait mosaic is progressing wonderfully! With the background crowd scene now complete, I’ve officially moved on to the intricate details of the facial features.

With his family's permission, I am deeply honored to finally share the name of this gentleman: Michael David Markman.

Naming him makes such a profound difference in conversations with visitors who drop by the studio. Michael passed away some years ago, and his wife, Julie, was a student of mine back when I taught mosaics in Bunbury. Sadly, she never got to finish this piece, and it is an absolute privilege to continue this work on her behalf.

As my sculpture progresses, my understanding deepens. Last Friday, I took an enjoyable class at Studio P Ceramics to learn how to create more lifelike eyes, noses, mouths, and ears. Now, I need to apply these techniques to the actual model. It has been a delightful day immersed in the process. I have good reference images to guide me, making this a step-by-step journey. Throughout the day, I take enjoyable breaks to welcome friends and visitors to the studio and share my progress. Feel welcome to call in; I'm there Mon, Wed, and Fri 10am - 3pm. My residency at the Inglewood Arts Hub has begun, and I am currently one week into a six-month tenure. It has been an exciting and enjoyable experience so far as I set up my studio and start one of two projects. For me, this residency is focused on exploring portraiture through two mediums: mosaic and sculpture. Thirty years ago, I attended the Claremont School of Art, where I took a unit in sculpture by the late Arthur Kalamaras, who emphasised techniques of the Old European Masters. I am now embracing the notes and diagrams I made all these years ago. First step: creating an armature to support the structure, then measuring and re-measuring to be certain of an eventual likeness. My daughter Rikki is my model, and the final critique will belong to her. Watch this space.
