Loving the Industrial/EBM sounds, broken beats, and dark, scary, horror atmospheres in techno music right now.

Happy New Year! First DJ gig for 2020, and I'm going back to the 80s!

Late last year, I heard Mark Dynamix Electronique club night is doing a celebration of Australian 80s music on the 26th of January.

I mentioned to Mark I have a collection of 12" vinyl records of Aussie bands from the late 80s that he could borrow if needed. He said, if you own them, I want you to play them!

It took a little convincing, and contemplation: back mixing with vinyl after 10+ years, DJing with music I bought in the 80s!

But, I love a challenge, and have such a strong emotional connection to this music, so yeah let's do it!

Electronique 12" 80s All-Aussie New Wave/Synth Pop special

~~

So prior to getting into techno/rave and clubbing in the early 90s... In 1988, 17 years old, playing keyboards, I started performing out live with dance/rock bands, in Adelaide's clubs and pubs (before I was legally old enough to be in them).

From 1986 to 1990 I went to concerts, pubs and clubs in Adelaide seeing these Aussie bands live: INXS, Pseudo Echo, Boom Crash Opera, Noiseworks, Icehouse, Eurogliders, Big Pig, Models, James Freud, The Venetians, Crowded House. On New Years Day 1987, I was melting in the sun at the Australian Made concert at Thebarton Oval, in Adelaide

You can see I wasn't exposed to, or interested in the more alternative or guitar heavy bands of the time. I loved melody and synths. I also had a strong focus on Australian music.

I remember I would often wait around after gigs to chat to the band members if I could, mostly to the keyboard players. Poor guys were probably trying to pick up chicks, and here I was being a synth nerd, chatting gear and sounds.

I loved buying and listening to the 12" vinyl releases of these Aussie 80s band's singles, with their extended versions. It's these versions, with extended stripped back drum beats and edits that got me interested in dance beats, loops, samples, sampling keyboards, drum machines, programming beats and MIDI sequencing, and then onto producing my own dance music.

I'll save my 90s music journey stories for another time. Note, I moved from Adelaide to Sydney in 1995 with live band Bliss.

I'm extremely thankful to my mum for supporting my passions for music and the journey I'm still on to this day.

Many thanks to mum and my sis, for sending up a bunch of my Aussie 80s 12" vinyl records recently, that I still had in Adelaide.

PS: For the synth nerds, my 80s/90s journey: Yamaha DX-100, Yamaha DX-7, Roland D50, Ensoniq ESQ1, Roland D-550, Ensoniq EPS, no analogue there sorry.
