New Theatre

New Theatre 542 King Street Newtown New Theatre was born from a democratic voice and from the very beginning we’ve done things our way. We’re driven by passion, not money.
(220)

We’re not slick, we’re not refined and we don’t conform. We believe in artistic and social expression, not just escapism. When we take the stage, we’re for real. Our doors are open to everyone – from those looking for their start, to those who never want it to end. We’re a beacon for social movement; a hub for local enthusiasts. We’re not interested in awards or accolades, we act out of love. You

can’t define us or second guess us. We won’t just invite you to take a seat, we invite you to take part. And we’ll always stay true to what we do. Always real. Always raw. Always New. "New Theatre's ability to showcase as well as nurture both mainstream and fringe elements of theatre is a rare gift to be treasured by the Australian arts community." - Inner West Courier

"New Theatre has an admirable tradition of staging plays that commercially focused companies wouldn't touch." - Time Out Sydney

In 2007, New Theatre was honoured by the National Institute of Dramatic Art for its contribution to the Australian Performing Arts and 75 years of continuous production. New Theatre is a non-professional theatre company and participation is on a voluntary basis. To become a member or to volunteer for our Front of House team, just visit the website NEWTHEATRE.ORG.AU

And it is with great pleasure that we welcome back Nathan Farrow as Dr. Vorless, Walter (and others)!

"Jay has managed to marry the authorial voice of John Wyndham with an exciting contemporary theatrical vision."

Nathan Farrow is an actor, writer, and director. He was born into a theatre family and has been performing for nearly forty years.

His work as an actor includes: Anthony: Love All (Roseville Story), Mr Sud: The Pot Boiler (Bittersweet), Ned Alleyn: Shakespeare In Love (New Theatre), Harry Wade: The Hangmen (New Theatre), Andy: Love Letters (Guild Theatre), Gomez: The Addams Family (MMT), Second Man: Kiss Me, Kate (Squabbalogic), French Ambassador: Of Thee I Sing (Squabbalogic)

He has a Masters Degree in Screenwriting from The London Film School, which he isn’t using enough. His adaptation of The Picture Of Dorian Gray was performed at The Genesian Theatre.

Nathan's favourite line? "They’re no different to a head of lettuce."

Next up, it's Claudia Elbourne as Susan (and ensemble)!

We asked Claudia what their first thoughts on reading the script were, and we were not disappointed: "'This is utterly insane and so awesome lemme at it' also 'I want to play a triffid'".

Claudia Elbourne is a passionate multidisciplinary artist working as an actor, director, educator and producer. They love scripts that make you go 'how in the world are we going to pull that off?' and care deeply about building community and creating work that asks tough questions without giving easy answers.

Some of their acting credits include: Juliet in 'Romeo & Juliet', Susannah in the feature film 'Venus & Adonis' and Tiresias in 'Antigone' (dir. Damien Ryan). They played Maya in a sold-out season of 'Snowflake' by Mike Bartlet at the Old Fitz Theatre (dir. Jo Bradley), which will be remounted at the Ensemble Theatre later this year, and originated the role of Mel in 'She Threaded Dangerously' by Emma Wright and Simon Thomson. They have been extensively involved in Sport for Jove’s education work, playing Abigail Williams in 'The Crucible', Miranda in 'The Tempest', Hero in 'Much Ado About Nothing' and Emilia & Bianca in 'Othello' for their symposium series, and this year played Helena and Snug the Joiner in their production of 'A Midsummer Night’s Dream' (dir. Miranda Middleton).

"... I'm excited to get into the detailing and choreography of it all, as well as just the exciting challenge of differentiating so many characters, and of course, finding ways to tell a story that is in so many ways about the loss of sight, through a fairly visual medium of story-telling. It is a play all about creative choices and being really wildly imaginative in our problem-solving, so it is going to be an exciting, unpredictable process!"

We know you're already getting excited for our next show, so lets introduce you to the team!

And first it's James Collins, playing Bill Masen!

"I grew up on British science-fiction & horror, so just the chance to play a part in an adaptation of one of the most seminal sci-fi/horror works was one I had to take. This astounding work from Jay highlights not only the unnerving terror and sense of all-pervading dread that haunts our characters, but also shines a light on some of the hidden beauty and tragedy of Wyndham's original story... As for what I'm most excited to stage, there is a scene late in the play involving a flame-thrower. That's all I will say."

James Collins is a passionate, raw performer who brings attention, detail and care to every role, no matter how great or small. Originally from Port Stephens, he graduated from Actors Centre Australia in 2024 and has been pursuing a professional acting career ever since.
Recent credits include: Arthur Somerset and Henry Newlove in 'The Flea' (Patrick Kennedy Theatre Machine, New Theatre); Danny in 'Port' (KXT).

His favourite line of the show?

"When a day you know is Wednesday starts off sounding like a Sunday, something -- somewhere -- is terribly wrong."

Last year, our theatre held 8 fantastic productions (2 of which were world premieres), with 63 cast members, 92 creatives and crew, and 15,452 people watching!

These numbers don't happen without your support. It's your donations that make it possible for us to keep our doors open, for both audiences and people expanding their creativity. Remember, anything over $2 is tax deductible, and those dollars could be what help us find a perfect prop or costume item!

As a community theatre we are proud to have worked with and welcomed so many people last year, and can't wait to continue doing so with your help!
