Hello Friends,
We’ve been a bit quiet on the Fearless Invention social media of late – not because we’re not deep in work on a brilliant new project – more BECAUSE we’re deep in work on a brilliant new project.
But now we’re all in lockdown and all our work has moved online.
We thought, since so many of us are in the same locked-down boat at the moment, we might share some of our strategies for staying connected and creative in between rounds of, “Can you hear me now? My mic’s not working for some reason,” and bushranger research (YES, you read that right – there will be well-researched bushrangers in our next project).
A favourite game we’ve developed is Finish the Quote.
Here’s how it works. Someone – in this case me – compiles a list of relatively well-known Shakespeare quotes – thank goodness this is an almost inexhaustible source of material – but cuts them short and leaves off the end. The challenge to our ensemble is to create brand new endings to these quotes with the only restriction that they can’t use whichever words dear old Will used in the originals.
I usually post five at a time in the Chat and give the ensemble five minutes to post their responses, also in the Chat, but this time only to me.
I quickly copy and paste the responses, but not the names of the respondees, into a document. When all the responses are in I screen-share the doc and we vote on our favourites. You’re not allowed to vote for your own and the player with the most votes wins the round.
Next time you’re stuck for something to get the creative brain working on zoom, give it a try.
(A week later I’m still giggling at, “Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your second-best shovel”.)
Here are some of our favourite examples.
