Having lived through the Golden Age of Rock Music, we lament the passing of the LP Record and all its magnificent graphic art. The avalanche of all things digital shattered our faith in

the industry and led to a shift in our retail focus away from Music’s new frontier back to the Art of Rock. Born on January 13, 1938, Daevid Allen was one of the great cosmic instigators of psychedelic music. A founding member of Soft Machine and later the visionary force behind Gong, Allen helped shape the Canterbury scene while pushing psychedelic rock into freer, stranger territory.

An Australian expatriate embedded in the UK and French undergrounds, Allen fused free-jazz improvisation, space rock, surreal poetry, and spiritual philosophy into a universe entirely his own. From Camembert Electrique to the Flying Teapot trilogy, his work invited listeners to slip the bounds of consensus reality and embrace the absurd, the cosmic, and the playful.

Still traveling the teapot trails. 🛸✨

Remembering Ollie Halsall on his birthday!😍
I witnessed and absorbed Ollie's playing more than any other guitarist. No other guitarist with the exception of Jimi had such an impact on my appreciation of the Art of guitar playing!😎

Remembering Ollie Halsall on his birthday!

Ollie Halsall was a British guitarist, pianist, vibraphonist, and singer known for his innovative playing style and contributions to progressive rock, jazz fusion, and pop music. Despite his immense talent, he remained largely underappreciated by the mainstream audience.

Born Peter John Halsall on March 14, 1949, in Southport, England, Halsall started his musical journey as a drummer before transitioning to vibraphone and later guitar. In the mid-1960s, he moved to London and joined Timebox, a band that blended psychedelic rock, soul, and jazz. Initially playing vibraphone, Halsall eventually became their lead guitarist, displaying a distinctive, fluid, and fast-fingered technique that would later influence generations of musicians.

In 1970, Timebox evolved into Patto, a progressive rock band led by singer Mike Patto. With Halsall's virtuosic guitar work at its core, the band gained a reputation for their complex compositions and freewheeling improvisations. Halsall's playing combined lightning-fast runs, unconventional chord progressions, and jazz-influenced phrasing, making him a favorite among musicians. However, despite critical acclaim, Patto struggled commercially, disbanding in 1973.

After Patto, Halsall briefly joined Jon Hiseman’s Tempest, where he played alongside guitarist Allan Holdsworth. His tenure was short-lived, but he continued pushing musical boundaries. Throughout the mid-1970s, he became a sought-after session musician, playing with artists such as Kevin Ayers, Boxer, and John Cale. His versatility allowed him to shift effortlessly between rock, jazz fusion, and pop.

In 1978, Halsall was involved in the Beatles parody band The Rutles, created by Neil Innes and Eric Idle of Monty Python fame. Though he appeared only briefly in the film All You Need Is Cash, his voice and guitar work were integral to many of the songs. Throughout the 1980s, Halsall settled in Spain, collaborating extensively with Kevin Ayers and performing in various projects. Despite his low profile, his influence on guitarists, especially within progressive and fusion circles continued to grow.

Ollie Halsall died on May 29, 1992, at the age of 43. While he never achieved widespread fame, his legacy endures through his innovative playing and the admiration of fellow musicians. Today, he is celebrated as one of rock’s greatest unsung heroes—a guitarist ahead of his time.
