East Melbourne early this morning. Hot air balloons over St Patrick’s Cathedral plus some twiggy ramification & a buttressing Fig trunk in the Fitzroy Gardens. Our city has great trees, many of them planted by people who never expected to see them grow to maturity.

Busy repotting future ‘project trees’ this week, all with great potential, to be offered for sale at upcoming Spring Exhibitions & Sales, especially Bonsai Society of Victoria 10-11 October, Box Hill Town Hall. Rapunzel the Chinese Elm sacrificed its long, long roots. Happy in a quality Chinese oval pot. Soaked with Plant Starter in the first water bath up to level of the rim, to reduce transplant shock & promote fibrous root development. My #1 repotting superstition. It works.

Valonian Oak is waking up after its short Winter dormant period. Today I knocked out the terminal bud on every shoot, including on the secondary branches. Vital if tedious work to increase ramification, reduce leaf size, restrict shoot extension & control internodal length when the tree bursts into leaf in a few weeks. One bud already opening! It will receive no fertiliser until new growth hardens off. Another year in this pot will also control growth, it’s a mature bonsai.
