National Young Writers' Festival

National Young Writers' Festival NYWF is an annual gathering of young writers. A place to show work, share ideas, and learn. In 2025 NYWF will take place in Newcastle 3-6 October.

Our programs are free, and made by / for young writers who create across stage, page, web and beyond.

Storytelling extends beyond words and into the visual. This keen group was lucky enough to learn from Balanggarra and Yolngu artist and illustrator Molly Hunt (This Book Thinks Ya Deadly!) in this workshop 'Visual Voices'. Molly shared insights on building compelling narratives, developing characters, and translating unique voices into visual stories.

There is something utterly magical about sitting surrounded by books and talking about creating art. In the cozy The Press Book House, Lay Maloney hosted a powerful conversation with regional poets Jaala Hallett and Brooke Scobie, exploring Blak storytelling from regional perspectives and how these narratives diverge from urban experiences. One of the best parts of writing fantasy is the opportunity to build entirely new worlds and let your imagination run wild with what that might look like. These writers were able to hear from Anna Krywyj Creamer, Simone Corletto and Eli Sutherland as they discussed their approaches to world-building, including common pitfalls, interesting entrances and the best source material at Perry on Parry Studios.

We don't know about you, but workshops are one of the best things about being at a writers festival! The opportunity to learn from others and apply in real time is an unmatched feeling.

This group was lucky enough to be part of Cass Li's stream of consciousness writing workshop, looking at how you can utilise photography to overcome writers block. Held at INNX.hub in Newcastle West, people were all smiles!

Can you believe it's been over a month since NYWF 2025? Neither can we! We're still daydreaming about how incredible it was to come together on the land of the Awabakal and Worimi people to celebrate the art of storytelling.

Our launch event, Intergenerational Knowing, was such a special way to kick off the festival. With a Welcome to Country by Aunty Theresa, and hearing from Jess Alice, the Chair of the NYWF Board, before having a yarn with one of our amazing creative producers Lay Maloney, board member and all-round legend Laurie May, and the incredible Phoebe McIlwraith. Take us back!

Our 2025 festival has come to an end after three incredible days across Newcastle on the land of the Awabakal & Worimi people. The NYWF team wants to say a massive thank you to everyone who was involved, from our artists & volunteers, to the people who came along to check it out!

We want to make sure NYWF continues to support the next generation of writers, and would love for those who were part of NYWF 2025 to fill out our feedback survey so we can continue to pull together a festival you want to be part of.

Reminder to all our wonderful NYWF attendees & artists, Daylight Savings Time (AEDT) starts tomorrow on Sunday 5 October 2025 when 2:00am becomes 3:00am.
