One of the most overlooked parts of healing is knowing when it's time to downsize your jewellery.

Initial jewellery is intentionally fitted with extra room to accommodate swelling. But once that swelling settles, leaving longer jewellery in place for too long can lead to unnecessary movement, irritation, and bumps.

Downsizing isn't just about making things look neater. It's about supporting comfort and long-term healing.

And timing matters.

Too early and the piercing may not be ready.
Too late and excess movement can start working against the body.

That's why we encourage clients to check in with us during the healing process. Sometimes all we need are a few clear photos. Sometimes a quick appointment is the best option.

One of the most common questions we get is, "Is this swelling normal?"

Most of the time, the answer is yes.

Swelling is your body's natural response to healing. It's one of the reasons initial jewellery is fitted with extra room — to give your body space to do what it needs to do.

Healing isn't always perfectly linear, either. Some days things feel settled, and other days you might notice a little more swelling, especially after sleeping on it, exercising, or simply having a busy day.

That's all part of the process.

What matters most is understanding what's normal, being patient, and reaching out when something doesn't feel right.
