Final weeks to catch 'Narrating Return' at Newcastle Art Gallery!

🌏This project explores how Newcastle Art Gallery’s expansion inspired ‘new worlds’ of collective making, gathering and storytelling. The display brings together elements of the offsite artist projects and events that took place while the Gallery was closed 🏗.

‘Narrating Return’ reflects on the relationships between art, performance, labour, materials, skills, construction, and cultural production that unfolded across the city during the expansion.

‘Narrating Return’ was created as part of a University of Newcastle research project, in partnership with Newcastle Art Gallery.

🎷 Celebrated European jazz musicians Jef Neve and Teus Nobel played to a sold-out crowd at Newcastle Art Gallery last Friday evening.

🎶 Together they reinvented jazz classics and showcased their latest album, Esho Funi — a reflection on the Japanese philosophy of union between self and environment.

Presented in partnership with NIMA – Newcastle Improvised Music Association.

Discover the mouth as a cultural landscape in Tiyan Baker, 'Mouth Mnemonica'🦷
Tiyan Baker’s first institutional solo exhibition centres around a newly commissioned multi-channel video work, 'to tangle together like coursing water'.

This project engages with the endangered language Bukar, spoken by her mother and other Bukar Bidayǔh people of south-western Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Furthered by sculptural elements 👄Baker encourages us to reimagine new methods to transfer intergenerational cultural knowledge.

Step into the 'Multiverse' this weekend👾A major solo exhibition by celebrated Cairns-based Torres Strait Islander artist Brian Robinson, known for his bold works of art and distinctive graphic language that blends Torres Strait minaral design with contemporary cultural icons.

In 'Multiverse', all of Brian's favourite things come together in one big, wild, wonderful world! As superheroes, sea creatures, and ancient stories collide, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

🎨School visits designed to inspire curiosity, creativity and connection with art!

Last week in the Gallery we hosted First Nations and Torres Strait Islander students from Islington Public School, Hamilton Public School, Mayfield East Public School and Tighes Hill Public School as part of National Reconciliation Week.

Students explored culture and storytelling in Brian Robinson's 'Multiverse' exhibition, took part in a hands-on weaving workshop with Torres Strait Islander artist Toby Cedar, and discovered the Water Stories behind our First Nations commissioned works of art.

Our education program is designed as inclusive and accessible for all ages, stages, and abilities.
