It’s International Women’s Day on Sunday 8 March, and in Newcastle that means it’s time for women’s poetry.
The IWD Poetry Salon is on again and women and non-binary poets and readers are invited to nominate to read at the event.
We’ll be holding it at the Oak from 2pm.
As in previous years, readers are encouraged to bring along favourite poems by women and non-binary poets to read. In past years we’ve heard poetry from the 17th century to the present day, from women from diverse backgrounds and experiences, young and old.
You are welcome to read your own poetry, too, of course!
Come and hear your old favourites and new poems you’ve never heard before. It’s bound to be a beautiful afternoon.
We usually get a lot of interest in reading, so the time slots will likely be short.

Dennis Golding is a Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist from the northwest of NSW. He has a fantastic (free) exhibition on in Maitland called "Power - The Future Is here." It’s a collaboration between Dennis and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. Tonight at MRAG Dennis is giving a talk about his journey as an artist, his inspiration for this exhibition and how he created it. It's free but you do have to book! 😊

An exciting part of the upcoming New Annual Festival is the one-woman show by theatre maker Janie Gibson, Voices of Joan! It's a solo performance unravelling the history of misogyny through a radical retelling of the story of Joan of Arc.
The show is on for five days starting September 27, and another interesting aspect is the free inner power workshop that's happening after the Sunday Matinee performance at 3pm at New Lambton Community Centre.
