Photo of Sarah Jane and I beside the river Suir, Waterford, Ireland, taken by Sarah Jane's mammy, Jane.
It was Mother's Day in Ireland. I was wearing a puffer jacket coat given to me in Hobart by my own daughter, Tami.

Sarah Jane and I and Jane walked alongside the river till we reached a section suitable for launching paper boats. Sarah Jane had created beautiful paper boats and Jane and I joined in making boats that we subsequently floated off onto the Suir River. The boats were an ode to mothers; to our mothers.

The fascinating thing was Sarah Jane was completely unaware that I used paper boats as visual symbolism in the telling of the story of transportation.
Without ships this story would have been very different.

The photos of the paper boats included here are from an event I held in Parramatta as part of an artists residency I was undertaking there in 2008.

These photos are from my friend, artist Lada Dedic's site: studiolada.com

Lada Dedić worked with me in the running of the Community Workshops sponsored through the Parramatta City Council.

On the weekend of the 12th & 13th November, 2022 'Roses from the Heart' will be holding an event, 'Bonnets and Boats' at Glen Derwent, New Norfolk.
The program will be published on social media soon.
Keep a watch on this page for further details.

The event will involve beautiful 'Roses from the Heart' bonnet tributes remembering a number of convicts, including all the Irish lasses who were aboard the 'Neva'. The 'Neva' set sail from Cobh, County Cork, Ireland and was headed to New South Wales, Australia with a ship load of convict women and their children, and some free women and their children who were anticipating being reunited with their convict husbands already in New South Wales. The 'Neva' sank off the coast of King Island, in Bass Strait, on 13 May 1835. This catastrophe will be remembered throughout the 'Bonnets and Boats' event by bonnet tributes that have been created acknowledging all the passengers aboard the 'Neva'; also through a significant ceramic installation created by talented artist Lee Farrell and by wooden boats exhibited over the weekend by the 'Wooden Boat Guild of Tasmania'. Students, performance artists and an array of aspiring guest speakers will be provide a compelling two days of incredible visual and audible insights into the past.

Some of the guest speakers will include Graeme Broxam who is a fountain of knowledge regarding Australian maritime history. Graeme has a particular interest in the 'Neva' and his 'not to be missed' talk will be fascinating.
('Those that survive: vintage and veteran boats of Tasmania'. Author: Graeme Broxam. 2009, ISBN: 0958656126 Navarine Publishing).

From King Island will be some exciting speakers: more on that next week as well as other guest speakers and information on their talks.

If you are planning to come for a day or for both days of the seminar event you will be able to book in a weeks' time when details will be added to this page.

Glen Derwent is a beautiful colonial property in New Norfolk, Tasmania and well worth a visit in its own right. Our weekly 'Roses froom the Heart' bonnet making group has been meeting there over the past three years stitching and embellishing bonnet tributes in memory of our female convict ancestors.
