Today, on National Sorry Day, Marrawanggan will be reflecting on the strength and resilience of our people, and honouring my Great Great Grandmother, Nanny Muriel Pearl Stewart (nee Cooley) 🖤💛❤️

A proud Yuin woman, respected Elder, artist, and trailblazer whose strength helped pave the way for the rights and opportunities Aboriginal people have today 🔥👣

As we remember the pain and ongoing impacts of the Stolen Generations, we also honour the Aboriginal families who carried unimaginable grief, loss, and displacement, yet continued to fight for Culture, community, and future generations. Their survival and resistance are the reason we are still here today 🥺💔✊🏾✨

In the early 1980s, Nanny Muriel made history as the first Aboriginal woman appointed as a Justice of the Peace in NSW, breaking barriers in spaces our people were once excluded from. She dedicated her life to fighting for justice, equality, education, and stronger futures for Aboriginal communities 🌟🧜🏾‍♀️🩵

Awarded an OAM for her service to Aboriginal welfare and community development, Nanny Muriel’s legacy lives on through her advocacy, leadership, art, and deep love for community and Culture 🍃 🪃

Today we remember the families affected by the Stolen Generations, we honour the Elders who fought tirelessly for our people, and we continue walking forward carrying their strength with us always ✊🏾✨

Please get behind deadly young dancer Gabby on her journey 🖤💛❤️

Making it to perform with Bangarra is an incredible achievement — especially for a little South Coast sissy girl with big dreams 💃🏾🌟

This is such a huge opportunity and we would love to see our community rally around Gabby and help make it happen 🫶🏾

It’s so beautiful seeing our young people chasing their passions, representing culture proudly and stepping into amazing spaces. Let’s support Gab and help her shine ✨🧜🏾‍♀️🩵

Hi, My name is Elizabeth I am Gabby’s aunty. I’m making this gofundme page to help support Gabe… Elizabeth Kelly needs your support for Gabby’s Dance Journey

My beautiful daughter and niece back in our dancing days with the Djaadjawan Dancers 🖤💛❤️

Feeling so proud looking back at these memories — my babies all grown up now 😭✨

So much love, culture, laughter and special memories shared through dance. Nothing makes me happier than seeing our young ones grow strong and proud in who they are 🫶🏾

I almost forgot I made this beauty at the start of the year! Handwoven from twine cord, this piece was such a joy to create and holds so much love in every weave 🖤💛❤️

Photographed alongside my Stringybark & Kurrajong fibre fishing net, the two pieces complement each other so beautifully — interconnected through weaving, story, and traditional practice 🌿🐟

There’s something really special about creating works that carry culture, knowledge, and connection through every thread. Woven with love, patience, and deep respect for our old ways 🧜🏾‍♀️✨

✨ Shell Slippers ~ Session #2 ✨

Had another beautiful session making shell slippers with Nan 😍🫶🏾
She already had everything laid out and ready to go when I arrived… too cute!!

Honestly, moments like these make me appreciate our old people even more ❤️ The skill, patience and love that goes into these tiny slippers is unbelievable.

These little beauties might look delicate, but they are HARD work 😂You definitely need steady hands, good eyesight and a whole lot of patience to make them properly! 🧜🏾‍♀️🩵🌟

Every shell is carefully placed by hand, carrying time, care and storytelling in every tiny detail 🐚✨

Nan and I were laughing saying we must REALLY love shells to spend hours doing this 🤣 but truthfully, it’s more than that. It’s about connection, sharing knowledge, keeping our traditions alive and creating memories together.

Nothing better than creating with your old people 🖤💛❤️

Guess who I got to meet….. 😍🫶🏾

Still having a fangirl moment 😂 after meeting the incredibly deadly MumRed at the First Nations Fashion + Design Reclamation Show ✨🖤💛❤️

For those who don’t know, MumRed was founded by the deadly Samala Thakialee Cronin — a proud Butchulla, Woppaburra & Lardil woman whose work centres around body sovereignty, cultural storytelling & elevating the matriarchy ✨✊🏾

Her Flow State Collection was absolutely incredible — designed to honour women through every stage of their sacred cycles while blending cultural knowledge with contemporary fashion. Every piece felt intentional, empowering & deeply connected to culture and womanhood ❤️🪼

Seeing Samala’s work in real life was honestly so special for me!!! Her collection was absolutely breathtaking and it was such a joy to finally meet the beautiful woman behind the designs I’ve admired for so long 🌟🔥

The creativity, strength, femininity & culture woven through your work is beyond inspiring. It’s powerful seeing First Nations women creating fashion that not only looks stunning, but carries such deep meaning, storytelling & care for our women and communities 🫶🏾🥹

Thank you sister for all the deadly work you do and for representing our people so powerfully in the fashion space. Watching Indigenous women thrive, create and reclaim space in this industry is honestly emotional and inspiring all at once 🥹🧜🏾‍♀️🩵

Definitely a pinch me moment I’ll never forget!!! 😍✨

✨ FINAL FIT CHECK ✨
First Nations Fashion + Design Reclamation Show Edition 🖤💛❤️

Saving the final look for yours truly — Ashweeni ~ Marrawanggan 🧜🏾‍♀️✨

Every piece I wear tells a story. Not just of fashion, but of culture, memory, family, Country & creativity woven together by hand 🍃 🪶

🤍 Woven Clutch Bag ~ by Ämėthýšt Miśtý
Another absolute masterpiece by this talented sister 🔥 The white weave paired with delicate gold detailing is pure luxury. I’m honestly obsessed with this bag 😍

🪶 Hairpiece ~ Marrawanggan
Made with fluffy Emu feathers and my signature scallop shell flower, this piece holds such a special place in my heart 🐚✨
This was actually the very first hair adornment style I ever created over 11 years ago — and it’s still one of my favourites today!! 🌸

🐚 Shell Earrings ~ Marrawanggan
I had a vision for layered shell earrings featuring three cascading scallop shells… and somehow they came out even better than I imagined 😍 Statement pieces with Gadu (rough sea) spirit energy 🌊

🐦‍⬛ Belt ~ Marrawanggan
This belt was hand-twined using stringybark fibres collected from Country. The Waagra (Crow) feet hanging from the ends came from the very first Budjaan (Bird) I ever collected 🍃🪶

My Nan and Aunty taught me how to respectfully collect feathers and body parts from passed Budjaans to create traditional dance adornments. Those teachings became the foundation of my practice today — transforming cultural knowledge into contemporary wearable art 🖤💃🏾

🪶 Possum Cuff ~ Marrawanggan
I created this piece while attending a women’s Bunaan (Ceremony) with the deadly women of Waminda - South Coast Women's Health & Wellbeing Aboriginal Corp. 🩷
After finding the little possum face, I twined raffia and Emu feathers together to create this adornment. I love knowing I carry the strength, laughter & love of those women with me whenever I wear it 😍

One of the most meaningful parts of my practice is creating traditionally. I don’t purchase materials from stores — everything is collected, prepared and created by hand from Country, or respectfully swapped with other Indigenous mob 💖🌟🧜🏾‍♀️

That connection to culture, community & creation is at the heart of every single piece I make 🖤💛❤️

Thank you for joining us for our First Nations Fashion + Design Reclamation Show fit checks this week 🧜🏾‍♀️✨

We hope you loved seeing Indigenous fashion, adornment & storytelling celebrated so proudly, representing the South Coast 🩵✨
