GLÓR Project Space is delighted to welcome Benjamin Shannon in Residency as part of our 2026 Gone 2 Ground series.
Benjamin grew up in Nambour and returns to spend two weeks at GLÓR developing Sunshine State, a new large ensemble work exploring place, environment and what it means to make music from Queensland.
Central to the residency is Benjamin’s ongoing work with Conduction, a creative practice sitting at the intersection of improvised and composed music, where a conductor uses a vocabulary of gestures and cues to shape music collectively in real time.
During his time at GLÓR, Benjamin will explore how Conduction can move in and out of composed material, developing new work for his ensemble, Low Pressure System. Drawing on summer storms, subtropical environments and the particular experience of growing up in the Sunshine State, the work asks how place might shape our creative voices and what makes us sound like us.
Benjamin is a composer, conductor, performer and researcher from Nambour whose practice sits within Australia’s experimental and improvised music scene. His work explores collective music making, improvisation and composition, with an interest in creating spaces for individual musical voices to emerge within a larger group.
We’ll be sharing more about Benjamin and the development of Sunshine State over the next while, and keep an eye out for Benjamin’s upcoming workshop at GLÓR on September 12. 🩶
