The idea came from a simple observation and my own desire to continue developing my work as an actor: self-taping has become a fundamental part of our profession, yet many of us only find ourselves in front of the camera when an audition lands in our inbox. We wanted to create a regular space where actors can stay sharp, practise the technical side of self-taping, and continue developing their work between opportunities.

This isn't an acting class, nor is it intended to be. Rather, it's a small collaborative working session where actors can bring audition material, scenes, monologues, or cold reads and have the opportunity to tape, review, refine, and support one another in the process.

Please come with something prepared to work on and tape.

The focus is on:

• Self-tape practice and recording
• Audition technique
• Camera awareness and eyelines
• Reviewing and refining takes
• Maintaining audition readiness

To ensure everyone has meaningful time on camera, sessions are limited to four actors.

Details

• Commencing Tuesday 16 June 2026
• 5:30pm – 7:30pm
• 208 Burnside Road, Perwillowen
• Fortnightly
• By invitation only
• Maximum 4 actors per session
• Places allocated on a first-confirmed basis

If this sounds like something you'd like to be part of, simply reply to confirm your interest and I'll lock in your place for the first session.

If you have any questions, please let me know. This is something I'm hoping to develop over time, so I welcome feedback, ideas, and input from those involved.

I think it has the potential to become a valuable space for actors who are committed to their craft and want to continue growing their skills in a practical, supportive environment.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Cheers,

In this video, Nobel Prize–winning actor and playwright Dario Fo performs one of his most famous routines — a brilliant Commedia dell’Arte monologue that explores the origins of Zanni, the character who later evolved into Arlecchino.

This piece comes from Fo’s celebrated body of work in which he revives the tradition of the medieval storytellers and the improvised comic roles of Commedia. In this routine, Fo dives into the historical roots of Zanni: the hungry, displaced peasants of 16th-century Northern Italy who were forced from their land by starvation and poverty. Zanni’s desperation, humour, and physicality eventually gave birth to one of theatre’s most iconic comic figures — Arlecchino (Harlequin).

Fo performs this monologue in his signature grammelot (invented dialect), mixing nonsense syllables, rhythmic sounds, mime, grotesque comedy, and social commentary. It is a masterclass in physical theatre and vocal storytelling.

To support drama teachers and students, I have added English subtitles to help viewers follow Fo’s performance more easily and understand the historical and theatrical significance of the routine.

🎭 Summary of the Video
Dario Fo recounts the social history behind Zanni, explaining how famine, migration, and poverty shaped the earliest Commedia characters. In the monologue, Zanni’s hunger becomes so overwhelming that he imagines eating himself, the audience, the mountains, and even God. This hallucination spirals into a dream-feast of polenta, birds, and boiling pots before crashing back into the reality of starvation. It is hilarious, tragic, physical, and deeply human — a definitive example of Fo’s genius.

⭐ About Dario Fo
Dario Fo (1926–2016) was an Italian actor, playwright, satirist, and one of the most influential theatre-makers of the modern era. He received the 1997 Nobel Prize in Literature for his work revitalising popular storytelling traditions. His performances combined improvisation, mime, political satire, and the Commedia dell’Arte’s physical and vocal techniques. Fo is widely regarded as the artist who brought the spirit of Arlecchino and the Zanni into the 20th century with fresh urgency and humour.

1. Why is body language important for actors during a performance?
Body language is important because if an actor's body language doesn't match what their dialogue is saying, the audience may not believe the performance.

2. Is improvisation only about intellectual skills or speaking quickly?
No, improvisation also has a physical side that involves engaging the body to be expressive.

3. What is part of improvisational training according to the text?
Learning how to free your body to be expressive is part of improvisational training.

4. Where are the actor training sessions held?
The actor training sessions are held at the Perwillowen studio just up the hill from Nambour on the Sunshine Coast.

5. Who should you contact if you want to join the actor training sessions?

There's a famous theatrical phrase: "Send in the clowns." It comes from an old performance tradition. When a show was losing its audience, when attention was drifting and energy was dropping, the maestro would send in the clowns. Why? they engaged the audience directly. There was no fourth wall between them and the crowd. They were spontaneous, responsive, and utterly present.
This is one of the most difficult skills to teach actors. How do you stand in front of an audience, read the room, and respond in real time? How do you pick up on offers, whether they're positive or negative?
You can't teach this through theory. You teach it through theatre exercises.
That's why I start with a simple exercise called Word Association. At first glance, it seems like just a warm-up game. But what's really happening is much deeper. Actors learn to listen actively and respond instinctively, work as a team building energy together, stay present without overthinking, and read and respond to what's being offered in the moment. These are the exact skills clowns mastered, the ability to be spontaneous, to work with whatever comes at them, and to keep the audience engaged no matter what.
In this course, you'll see this introductory exercise in action. Once students understand how to listen and respond to each other, I extend these principles to teach them how to connect with an audience. It's about being interactive, fearless, and truly present. Because every performer should know how to answer when the call comes: Send in the clowns.
