Vessel has ended ... !!! ...

The Vessel exhibition that began five weeks ago at the Old Ambo Galleries in Nambour officially closed on Saturday - and now the gallery lays bare waiting for the next exhibition to be mounted ...

Curators Ken and Sandy - ( although we are exhausted with aching backs and swollen ankles ) - want to thank the 43 artists that contributed to the show, and the hundreds of visitors who walked through the doors - some purchased splendid artworks and all oohed and aahed as they meandered around the gallery - and a final thank you to the eight Ambo Gallery volunteers who greeted the visitors and who kept an eye on the artworks.

Thank you to everyone. K & S ...

.." ... I don’t analyze where my work is going. I start with a concept, an idea, song lyrics or a found object and it develops organically as I explore different mediums and ways to fully express my vision. Only in retrospect can I see how one work informs another or how some obscure object I’ve held onto for years is suddenly needed in a piece. I’m interested in the hands-on development of assemblage and the randomness of material ..."...

.. " ... This unbound metal artists' book, in brief, tells the story of the injustice of the removal of Scottish Highland farmers from their farms and how they were manipulated into becoming fishermen resulting in much hardship, poverty and death.

The words that appear on the seven pages of the book are as follows:

- coerced by an inhumane experiment
farmers unaccustomed to the sea
- tried to draw subsistence from a destructive sea
- on a rocky and perilous shore
- forced to purchase unsafe boats
- served a deadly apprenticeship to the sea
- a multitude found a watery grave ..."...

"Tapping into Eros 1" is one of a series of three vessels from Chatsworth ( via Gympie ) artist Kym Barrett ..... oils, cold wax and gold leaf on canvas ....."... Ideas from FALLING UPWARD by Richard Rohr -
Our ego (represented by a delicate bowl shape) is the outer expression of our consciousness or soul. It is the VESSEL whereby we perform the ‘general dance’ of life in the world.
As we encounter challenges and humiliations in our life, we learn to let go of our egocentric preoccupations and control and we become seekers after something or someone deeper.
We rediscover the rich contents of the vessel, our Essence (symbolised by gold). We are now able to tap into Eros/Life Energy/God and live our ‘sacred dance.’

This set of 4 vessels from Eumundi artist Susan Davis is titled "Flower Vessels - memory incarnate" - rice paper, tissue paper, digital prints, inks, foraged natural material.
.." ... The cycle of life and death is compressed in the life of a flower, and flowers also serve as symbolic expressions of these significant milestones in our lives. They become vessels of manifest expression, vessels of contemplation for our sorrows, vessels that remind us of the presence of grace, hope and joy. The beauty of the native iris (Patersonia sericea) is so transient – each flower blooming for only one day – a vibrant expression of hope, a promise for new life in the future. The native iris has been a symbol and inspiration for this work and my life over the past few years. Here it serves as a vessel or vehicle for expressions of love and loss. Drawings in process and form become a meditation upon moments of intimacy with each bloom, and moments of memory that connect me to loved ones no longer with us. Revisiting the images and presence, layers of memory accumulate and erode, hence works feature drawings with edges torn, prints eroding, ephemeral natural forms which may break down and disintegrate, but are also bearers of light ..."...

... Today's three vessels in the exhibition come from Buderim artist Taryn King ... 'Vessels of Memories' - and feature artists own images/printed on photographic paper, satin fabric, cotton thread, steel, lights.
.."... Photos are vessels to evoke memories of a particular time, space and place and I wanted to use photos that I have taken and present these in a trio of ‘Vessel’ memories. These photographs have been sewn onto fabric bringing them from their 2D narrative into 3D installation vessels that I like to call ‘Vessels of Memories’. These fabric vessels are light filled, photographs are stitched and perforated to allow light to breathe through, holding space with the fabric creating another way to evoke memories ..."...
