It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr Billy Cooley.
A master craftsman, respected cultural leader, brilliant storyteller and one of the longest-serving pillars of Maruku Arts, Billy dedicated much of his life to family, culture, community and the sharing of knowledge.
After arriving in Central Australia in 1972 and meeting his lifelong partner Lulu, Billy built a remarkable legacy through his wood carvings, cultural leadership and decades of service to Maruku Arts as an artist, mentor and Director.
Thousands of visitors to Uluṟu were privileged to meet Billy and learn from his stories, humour, wisdom and deep knowledge. His influence extended far beyond Central Australia through the artworks he created and the lives he touched.
Our thoughts are with Lulu, their children, grandchildren, extended family and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
The family welcomes messages, memories and contributions towards funeral expenses via [email protected].
May he rest in peace.
