So, so proud of all our young artists for completing their awesome clay sculptures that are currently featuring in the Art In The Porongurup event.

If you’re looking for something inspiringly creative to do during the week, head out to Porongurup and check out both the amazing sculpture trail and all the art and craft in the hall.

The Art Shed ‘s entry titled ‘Pure Imagination’ is #32 on the sculpture trail… it’s true testimony to the 9-12 year olds who are members of the Explore Express Excel Young Artists Program ….. congratulations to them all and huge, huge thanks to their art teacher Christine Baker who gently guided and encouraged them….. and ensured the sculptures survived the hot weather without cracking ….. always working behind the scenes!

The winning entries will be used on resources to help us promote health, safety and wellbeing for children and young people right around country WA.

S T U N N I N G S H I B O R I !

Our popular Indigo Shibori Workshop with textile artist Fiona Glen was on this weekend … and what fun they had !

On Day 1 participants learned the techniques of the fascinating ancient Japanese art of Indigo Shibori, using Indigo dyes to create crisp and organic patterns on practice pieces of cloth.

On day 2, the cheerful group prepared their fabrics by stitching, knotting, twisting and stringing and experimented how to dye with Indigo and the Shibori dying process.

Well done to everyone - the results are awesome 🤩

Join us at The Art Shed for a fun weekend with Porongurup textile artist Fiona Glen on Sat 8 + Sun 9 Feb.

Learn the fascinating ancient art of Indigo Shibori, using Indigo dyes to create crisp and organic patterns on fabric.

Shibori is the Japanese word derived from the word Shiboru which means to wring, squeeze, or press. It’s used for a variety of manual resist dying techniques, that involves shaping and securing the fabric before dyeing to create patterns. Known to be one of oldest Japanese dyeing techniques, the first appearances of Shibori dyed fabrics date back to the eighth century. Regardless of the material, a finished Shibori-dyed fabric can simply be referred to as Shibori, i.e. a Shibori shirt. Shibori fabrics are traditionally dyed with Indigo, but the term Shibori simply refers to the physical processes applied to the fabric before dyeing, not the colour.

After preparing your fabrics, learn how to dye with Indigo and experiment with the Shibori dying process.

You’ll finish the workshop with a unique scarve (extra blank scarves available to purchase on the day), or choose to bring your own white fabric pieces and/or clothing items.

The Cheeky Parrot Gallery is thrilled to be hosting the first ever dedicated Youth Art Prize in Mount Barker and there’s extra time to get your entry in!

The incredible talents of young people aged 8 to 18 will be exhibited during the inaugural Youth Art Show from January 3 to February 2, 2025 - offering the opportunity to win a $100 voucher for Lavender Bee (our fabulous local arts & crafts supply specialist).

This is a great way for young artists to get their creativity seen and they can also opt to have their work for sale.

Entry details:
⭐️ 1 entry limit per person
⭐️ Simply have your original artwork (any medium that’s 100% yours, not copied and has no AI involvement!) presented ready to display (picture hangers on canvas/framed work)
⭐️ Label with name, age, contact number and price (if applicable)
⭐️ The Art Prize will be totally independently judged… even we don’t know the judge!
⭐️ Open to all Great Southern 8 to 18 year olds
⭐️ 20% from sales donated to youth art programs… 80% to the artist
⭐️ Submit to The Cheeky Parrot Gallery by 1pm December 24
⭐️ DM with any questions!
