A simple arrangement of fruit becomes a study of colour, time and observation in Phil Went's Apricots. Olivia Chin, Mt Speculation Resonates, oil on linen

A fleeting encounter in Victoria's Alpine National Park becomes the foundation for Olivia Chin's Mt Speculation Resonates. Inspired by the sudden rustle of a copperhead snake moving through long grass, the work reflects on the ways memory transforms experience over time. Twisting snow gums, shaped by regrowth and fire, become a metaphor for this process of continual change, while layers of paint evoke the interconnected rhythms of landscape, sound, movement and the body. The result is a work that lingers between observation and recollection, where place is felt as much as it is seen.

Dapeng Liu, Somewhere Else, oil on canvas

Inspired by a fleeting encounter with evening light, Dapeng Liu's Somewhere Else began with the final rays of sunset filtering through roadside trees along Old Northern Road in Dural. Although the moment lasted only seconds, its atmosphere lingered long after it disappeared. Rather than documenting the scene exactly as it appeared, Liu uses colour, gesture and shifting space to recover the emotional resonance of the experience, exploring the delicate balance between observation and memory, human order and the unpredictability of the natural world.

Through layers of accumulation and erasure, Flin Sharp's 'winnowing (Kozyrev mirror)' explores the ways images persist, transform and return over time. Fragments of earlier marks remain visible beneath the surface, creating a composition that moves between recognition and uncertainty. Drawing on the speculative concept of the Kozyrev Mirror, Sharp uses painting as a space where images are continually received, remembered and reconstituted, reflecting the instability of memory and the enduring presence of what has been seen.
