I spy with my little eye 🧐🐦

Our expert Bird Keepers have been living the birders dream. They’ve been busy sitting outdoors, ears perked to full attention and eyes peeled for bird-life in Sanctuary One, our first Habitat Positive site. Our long-term goal for this landscape-scale restoration initiative, is to re-wild the 3,050-hectare site by planting climate resilient trees and connecting corridors for threatened Australian wildlife.

Before planting begins, a vital first step is building a picture of what plants and animals already call this landscape home, by creating an "ecological baseline".

Let us introduce the Red-capped Robin, and the vulnerable Diamond Firetail Finch – just two of the 104 birds recorded by our experts during their surveys! Six of the species they recorded are listed as vulnerable under the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Act, highlighting the importance of protecting and restoring places like Sanctuary One. We're excited to see the bird-life grow as restoration of the site begins 🌱

A massive thank you to our inaugural Habitat Positive Sanctuary One partner, Sydney Airport, for supporting the first stages of this critical restoration

A small turtle, a big fight for life 🐢💙

In late April, this female Macquarie River Turtle was found in Centennial Park with fishing line extending from her mouth. When she arrived at Taronga Wildlife Hospital, vets discovered a large hook embedded deep in her throat.

There was no easy way to remove it so our team had to perform complex surgery to give her a chance.

She has now spent the past month slowly recovering in our care. Check out these pics of our Senior Veterinarian Tim checking the internal wound site using an endoscope to make sure she’s on the right track.

This wildlife patient story is just one of many. Each year, more than 1,500 native animals are treated at our two Taronga Wildlife Hospitals.

Your support helps make this care possible. From emergency procedures to rehabilitation, every donation helps give wildlife a second chance.

Until 5am tomorrow, you donation will be doubled. Please consider donating today at give.taronga.org.au 💚

A glider with a second chance ❤️‍🩹

This adult Yellow-bellied Glider was found entangled in a barbed-wire fence, with severe injuries to his patagium, the delicate membrane that helps him glide between trees.

In a remarkable turn of fate, he was taken to Cooranbong Animal Hospital, where Dr Dolly Jackson provided urgent care. Having recently completed Taronga’s Veterinary Professional Training in Wildlife Treatment course, Dr Jackson had the skills and confidence to act fast, giving this little glider a fighting chance.

After initial surgery, she personally transferred him to Taronga Wildlife Hospital, where he’s now undergoing intensive rehabilitation.

Over the past month, he’s needed careful physiotherapy to help his fragile gliding membrane heal. As the tissue repairs and contracts, his ability to glide is still limited, making a full recovery slow and uncertain.

Today only for Taronga Giving Day, your compassion goes twice as far. All donations to Taronga's two Wildlife Hospitals will be matched, doubling the care for wildlife, just like this glider.

Please donate now to double your impact at give.taronga.org.au 💚

A little grooming goes a long way.

Ring‑tailed lemurs have a unique toothcomb that works like a natural brush, helping them care for their fur and each other.

These gentle grooming sessions aren’t just adorable - they’re important moments where lemurs build rapport, trust, and harmony within their group.
