Anatomy Lessons & Gathered Threads: Lyrical Practices are opening at LRG tomorrow.
Originally from Australia, Beevors has a Master of Fine Arts and has been practicing in New Zealand for the last 22 years. She is Principal Lecturer/Sculpture at Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic, New Zealand’s oldest, and one of its most prestigious, art schools.
Beevors has exhibited in several galleries, museums and exhibition spaces in New Zealand, Australia and Vienna. Large scale exhibitions include Debbie does Disney, which was shown in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, so we are honoured to have this exhibition at LRG for the winter.
Across the gallery, 17 soft sculpture, animal-like fossils, entice a sense of curiosity, eeriness, wit and deep reflection. They prompt us to consider how humans live with—and live off—animals, and what it means to be an animal in the Anthropocene, (the era in which human activity shapes the natural world more than any other force). For this Latrobe Regional Gallery activation, Anatomy Lessons becomes a eulogy for the species Beevors has chosen to honour, drawing attention to their endangered status and offering a museological commentary on display, care and the ethics of presenting the remains of creatures passed.
Pop in and check this out from tomorrow at 10am.
