Anatomy Lessons & Gathered Threads: Lyrical Practices are opening at LRG tomorrow.

Originally from Australia, Beevors has a Master of Fine Arts and has been practicing in New Zealand for the last 22 years. She is Principal Lecturer/Sculpture at Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic, New Zealand’s oldest, and one of its most prestigious, art schools.

Beevors has exhibited in several galleries, museums and exhibition spaces in New Zealand, Australia and Vienna. Large scale exhibitions include Debbie does Disney, which was shown in the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, so we are honoured to have this exhibition at LRG for the winter.

Across the gallery, 17 soft sculpture, animal-like fossils, entice a sense of curiosity, eeriness, wit and deep reflection. They prompt us to consider how humans live with—and live off—animals, and what it means to be an animal in the Anthropocene, (the era in which human activity shapes the natural world more than any other force). For this Latrobe Regional Gallery activation, Anatomy Lessons becomes a eulogy for the species Beevors has chosen to honour, drawing attention to their endangered status and offering a museological commentary on display, care and the ethics of presenting the remains of creatures passed.

Pop in and check this out from tomorrow at 10am.

Anatomy Lessons is a major touring exhibition by New Zealand–based, Australian artist Michele Beevors. The exhibition is the accumulation of 17 years of intricate, immaculate knitting work, through which Beevors explores climatic distress, animal rights, the labour of care, and knitting as a meditative trauma response. Her practice traces the grander ecological effects of extractive industries while holding space for grief, responsibility and the fragile entanglement between humans, animals and the environments we share.

Opening today!

Arca Arcade: Round One is a convergence of nostalgic technology and contemporary artistic sensibilities.

Under the direction of designer Preston McNeil, playable arcade machines take on a transformative role as wall mounted installations that are adorned with te ao Māori influences and styles of Aotearoa New Zealand’s eminent artists. This collection stands as a poignant homage to the enduring allure and cultural significance of arcade gaming. Don’t mistake Arca Arcade for just a throwback to yesteryear, this modern take on arcade cabinet design becomes a canvas to explore the intertwining of inspiration and fabrication, to create the unexpected.

THE LANE - OUR COMMUNAL HOME

Come along to our Communal Home in The Lane – a playful, welcoming space inspired by the themes of home, migration, and community explored in our current gallery exhibitions.

In The Lane, people can explore these ideas through making and creating. These are self-guided activities encourage people to think about what home means to them – the objects they treasure, the people who make them feel safe, the rooms they remember, and the landscapes that remind them of belonging. Together, these small creations form a communal, ever-changing portrait of home.

Open until Monday 8 June.
