𝗔𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 - Hilary Metcalf

There’s something truly special about textiles that have lived a life before, stories woven into every fibre.

Our featured artist, transforms vintage Japanese indigo fabrics and recycled textiles into beautifully stitched, embellished, and woven pieces, including sakiori—a traditional Japanese technique of weaving with torn fabric strips.

From one-of-a-kind homewares to meaningful memory pieces, her work celebrates sustainability, craftsmanship, and the beauty of giving old materials new life.

At the EFTAG Market Day, you’ll find a curated selection of indigo pieces, sakiori works, and even some stunning vintage Japanese fabrics.

Stop by for a chat (She loves sharing her passion!) and don’t miss the chance to join one of her FREE Sakiori Coaster Workshops. A hands-on way to experience this beautiful craft - follow the link in our BIO.

There’s a quiet alchemy in transforming raw material, not into a finished piece, but into possibility.

At Grampians Textures 2026, EFTAG fibre artist took part in a eco dyeing workshop, working with kangaroo leather pelts as her canvas. What emerged was not a collection of completed works, but a series of richly marked surfaces, each one a beginning.

Through the slow, intuitive process of eco dyeing, botanical elements imprint, shift, and settle into the leather. Colour is coaxed rather than controlled. Marks are gathered rather than placed. The result is a material that carries the trace of process, place, and time.

These pelts now hold future potential, to be cut, shaped, and reimagined into new forms within Carolyn’s evolving practice.

It’s a reminder that in textile and fibre art, the story doesn’t begin at the final piece. It begins here — in experimentation, in material exploration, and in the willingness to let the process lead.

At EFTAG, we’re continually inspired by the ways our members explore, expand, and share their creative journeys, bringing new ideas back into our community.

When recycled materials meet creative hands… magic happens ✨

Our latest EFTAG workshop was all about paperclay, learning how to make it from scratch, then transforming simple materials like newspaper, twigs, and chopsticks into expressive sculptural forms.

From building the base structure to layering and refining details, it was incredible to watch each piece evolve into its own unique creature (with so much personality 🐦).

Now they’re drying in the sun, and we’re counting down to Part 2… where paint, texture, and embellishment will bring them fully to life 🎨

At our monthly members’ gathering, we invite everyone to take part in a show and tell. It might be something they’re currently making, something recently completed, or something they’ve seen or discovered that sparked inspiration. It’s always a joy to see what comes through the door and how it ignites new ideas among our community of fibre artists.

Vale Mischi West
It is with great sadness that we mark the passing on 3 December of one of EFTAGs earliest members Mischi West.

Mischi was a spinner, weaver and knitter for 50+ years with a a passion for textiles which began in her native Germany as a child. Mischi’s many skills included indigo and shibori dying, eco printing, needle felting, felting, textile piecing and textile sculpture.

We’re so grateful that Mischi participated in both the 2025 Showcase and Entwined birthday exhibition this year. She was a driving force within EFTAG for many years, a respected and valued member, and her vision will live on.

Our thoughts and love go out to all her loved ones and friends at this difficult time.

Sharing more EFTAG memories before the opening of our 20th birthday exhibition this Friday at 6pm in the Mechanics Institute.
In this image are the attendees at the first EFTAG meeting on the 15th March 2005, Michelle Anuhahong, Margaret Ensby, Jo Fletcher, Mary Gilmour, Jennifer Hawkins, Karen McPherson and Mischi West. Rommie Gerber-Reddington behind the lens.

Mischi recalls that the group got together because we wanted more than what we were doing, spinning, weaving, quilting, knitting and so on. We wanted to push the boundaries as far as textile art went. We had the usual discussion about what is art, what is craft, and what’s is the difference?
We encouraged each other to take our passion further, and we did. We never thought we’d have more than 10-15 members and we had a pretty rigorous selection criteria.
We always encouraged people to push the boundaries in their work and positive and constructive feedback was encouraged.  Our group was always safe for members to express themselves.

Please add your memories of EFTAG events in the comments below. Perhaps you remember the fashion parades or attended a workshop.
