🦋Meet the Dancer🦋

Flo is one of our gorgeous adult dancers at Academy Ballet. She brightens our day every time she is in the studio and kindly shares her story below:

‘Ballet was a major part of my life until I was 17, when I stopped for personal reasons. Over the following years, I tried every hobby and sport under the sun in order to fill the void that dance left. Fear, self-judgement and insecurity held me back from doing the obvious and stepping back into a dance studio – I didn’t want to embarrass myself by not being any good!
Last year, I came across Academy Ballet, and decided that after 16 years it was time to start dancing again. It is no exaggeration to say that it is one of the best decisions that I have ever made! Academy Ballet welcomed me in a supportive, non-judgemental and fun environment. As an adult ballet dancer, the weekly routine of coming to the barre has become my meditation, there is an almost addictive feeling of achievement gained from subtle improvements in practice and my own body image has improved. As an adult I think we are much more attuned to appreciate what our bodies are capable of, and for me I feel it most when dancing an expressive port-de-bras or a joyful grand allegro. I think that I enjoy ballet more now as an adult than I ever did as a child, and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to do it in a space that I love!’
