Did I mention I painted?
I was invited by Monash Uni’s Safer Community Unit to create this piece, reflecting on the theme ‘resilience’.
I decided to weave a basket to inform my reference for the painting, an act that only a few years ago my ancestors couldn’t do. Due to the effects of invasion, our cultural practices of weaving in my immediate family lay dormant. But that’s not the case anymore. This sleeping practice has been woken up. I created this basket with joy and love in every stitch, making up for lost time. This act of making is an act of resilience. This basket has an open stitch, with the intent of using it as a diving bag. Suggestions of this context are provoked with the background of flowing blues and bubbles.
This piece is on display until Aug 15, Matheson Library Level 1 Monash University. Not for sale.
