A house like Martindale did not run by itself.

Behind its polished tables, fires, bedrooms, horses and grounds was a considerable workforce.

Historical records show Martindale employing cooks, laundresses, butlers, housekeepers, domestic servants, grooms, coachmen and gardeners.

The estate created employment for people throughout Mintaro and the surrounding district, while workers also maintained the polo and cricket grounds and cared for the horses and hounds used for hunting.

It is easy to walk into a grand house and notice its owners.

Look a little more closely and another story begins to appear.

The people who cooked in its kitchen.
Polished its silver.
Tended its horses.
Washed its linen.
Prepared its rooms before the guests arrived.

Their work is part of Martindale's story too.

Set among the rolling country around Mintaro, the Hall offers the chance to step inside a grand nineteenth-century country house and experience the rooms, objects and stories that remain within it.

You may have seen this staircase before.

In 1975, Martindale Hall became part of Australian cinema history when Peter Weir used it extensively during the filming of Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Standing in for Appleyard College, Martindale's interiors appear throughout the film.

The central hall and staircase, bedrooms, bathrooms, dining room, drawing room and Smoking Room all became part of the mysterious world of the film.

Windows, wallpapers, furniture, heavy curtains and the architecture of the Hall helped create an atmosphere audiences around the world came to recognise.

Fifty years later, you can still walk through many of those same rooms.

Sometimes the most interesting film locations aren't sets at all.

They're places you can step inside.

The things we bring home often tell the story of where we have been.

In 1930, Jack and Ranson Mortlock and their pastoral manager, E. E. Scarfe, left Adelaide on a three-month journey through Java, Singapore, Penang, Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, and India.

They travelled first class, stayed in grand hotels and returned with artworks, souvenirs and curios for Martindale Hall.

Among their purchases were brassware, a model of the Taj Mahal, objects from Java and brightly coloured images of Hindu gods.

Many of the objects collected by the Mortlocks remain within Martindale today.

Together they turn the Hall into something more than a South Australian country house.

They are reminders of the people who lived here, the world they travelled through, and the complicated period in which those journeys were possible.

Look closely when you visit.

Some of Martindale's most interesting stories are sitting quietly on its shelves and walls.

A country weekend at Martindale.

There was a time when a weekend at Martindale might involve arriving from Adelaide by train, being collected at Mintaro station and spending the day between the cricket pitch, polo field and the rooms of the Hall.

The Martindale estate was created as much for entertaining as it was for living.

There were horses in the stables, sporting grounds surrounding the house and, at the centre of it all, a grand country house known for its hospitality.

The polo matches may have gone, but Martindale remains a place that asks you to stay a little longer.

Walk through the rooms.
Look beyond the house to the landscape.
Take your time.

Country house life was never intended to be rushed.

This house was never meant to sit quietly, it was built for people to come together.

When Edmund Bowman established Martindale Hall in the 1880s, the surrounding 9,000-acre estate included a polo field, cricket pitch, boating lake and racecourse.

Guests travelled from Adelaide by train, were collected from Mintaro station and brought out to Martindale for days of cricket, polo and hunting, interspersed with hospitality inside the Hall.

More than 140 years later, the reason for many of these rooms still makes perfect sense.

The dining room still looks better with people around the table.
The entrance hall still feels like somewhere guests should arrive.
The grounds are still best experienced with people moving through them.

Martindale Hall was designed for gathering.

It still is.
