FROM CANNES TO MILDURA...

Before arriving on our screen at Wallis Cinema, 'A Private Life' has travelled through some of the world's most prestigious film festivals.

The film made its world premiere at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival, screening as part of the Official Selection. From Cannes it travelled to the Telluride Film Festival, followed by gala screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and the New York Film Festival.

Toronto was particularly special for Jodie Foster, who was honoured with a TIFF Tribute Award, recognising her extraordinary career in cinema.

Now it's Mildura's turn.

JODIE FOSTER — EN FRANÇAIS!

We all know Jodie Foster, but perhaps not quite like this.

A two-time Academy Award winner for 'The Accused' and 'The Silence of the Lambs', Foster has been appearing on our screens since childhood. In 'A Private Life', however, she does something remarkable, taking her first leading role in a French-speaking film.

Foster is fluent in French, having attended a French-language school in Los Angeles from childhood but she has spoken about the challenge of performing such a dialogue-heavy leading role entirely in the language. To prepare, she even spent several weeks in France speaking no English at all!

The result? Critics have repeatedly singled out Foster's performance and her seemingly effortless French as highlights of the film.

A PSYCHIATRIST TURNS DETECTIVE...

In 'A Private Life', Jodie Foster plays Lilian Steiner, a renowned American psychiatrist living and working in Paris. When one of her long-term patients dies unexpectedly, Lilian is deeply troubled and becomes convinced that her death was not su***de, but murder.

Unable to let it go, Lilian begins her own investigation, drawing her ex-husband Gabriel, played by the wonderful Daniel Auteuil, along for the ride.

But this is no conventional murder mystery. As Lilian searches for the truth about her patient, the investigation begins to raise questions about how well she really knew her and perhaps how well she knows herself.

Part mystery, part dark comedy, and part character study, 'A Private Life' promises something a little different.

WHAT A CAST!

Jodie Foster isn't the only reason to see 'A Private Life'. Director Rebecca Zlotowski has surrounded her with some formidable French acting talent.

Alongside Foster is Daniel Auteuil, one of France's most celebrated actors, playing Lilian's ex-husband Gabriel, who gets drawn into her increasingly unconventional investigation.

There's also Virginie Efira, Mathieu Amalric, Vincent Lacoste, and Luàna Bajrami.

But it's the chemistry between Foster and Auteuil that critics have particularly enjoyed, two exes investigating a possible murder together. What could possibly go wrong?

What a wonderful response to DJ Ahmet!
With a StarBox score of 4.4 ⭐, it is one of our highest-rated films of the year, on par with Hamnet.
There were lots of very happy people leaving the cinema, with members telling us how much they enjoyed the film and some describing it as one of the best we’ve screened this year.
A great result for this charming little film!
