Happy 2024! I hope January has been kind to you.

My first post for the year and it’s not a mushroom! This is a greeting card made with a cyanotype print from a paper cutout. I bought the paper cutout from the cutting room floor of Melbourne artist Laura Jane, who has since moved on to other adventures. This print came out so crisp that I had to turn it into a greeting card. The touch of embroidery just gives it a little something, though it would be just as good without it.

Cyanotype is much more than just stencils, and I want to experiment more. As I really love this deep indigo colour and the simplicity of this design, I want to try to next incorporate mushroom designs and maybe a three dimensional feel. Shall be interesting to see what happens next!

This is the opposing side of my Perfect Sketchbook of the previous post’s painting. It inspired me to create my own mushroom landscape. And even though these mushrooms wouldn’t grow together like this I quite like how they look together. They were so enjoyable to paint. It took me ages to get this together and I tried a few iterations. Thankfully I could use my iPad to try layouts and colours without having to waste paint and paper. Now I have a few other ideas in mind. Blue mushrooms anyone?

After painting a bunch of mushrooms on hot pressed watercolour paper (smooth and great for details) lately I’ve been itching to try some mushies on cold pressed watercolour paper. This paper is textured and paints blend so much better on it. It’s great for getting more visual texture too. When I saw Anna (.m.bucciarelli) paint a landscape of mushrooms I knew I had to try her layout. Because I wanted it on the right hand side of my Perfect Sketchbook I flipped her design and I also removed her squirrel. It’s a cute squirrel but I didn’t want to try it. Anna’s tutorial makes it look easy, I just wanted to paint mushrooms.

The colours turned out so bright on this paper, I struggled to photograph them well. Regardless, I love how this realistic, illustrative style painting turned out.

Coming next is the painting I made on the opposite side making my own design.

The last mushroom painting I made I said I was on the lookout for more colourful mushrooms. However since painting the “white” butterfly (see my previous post) I wanted to have a go at painting a white mushroom. And since I had just received a new brush - the Eradicator brush from - I knew I needed to try to paint this mushroom. The eradicator (awesome hero sounding brush 😁) does wonders for picking up paint to lighten areas for extra texture and also helps pick up paint for added highlights) This brush was perfect for this mushroom in getting those highlights where I had just a little too much paint. The white areas in this mushroom are just the white of the paper. This eradicator helped get a nice blend in certain areas. I love adding new tools to the kit!

Mushrooms are taking over!!!! 🍄🍄🍄But in a good way 😉

I am obsessed but I’m trying to keep it under control with small and useful items. I’ve recently finished making myself my own leather mushroom keyring. Swipe across to see my first attempt 😅 I learn from doing, so this helped me with my second attempt which I’m happy to have hanging with my keys. There is still room for improvement!

I didn’t follow any tutorials for this one, just inspiration from the interwebs and my stash of supplies. It would have been quicker to paint one instead but I had fun putting this together. It was like problem solving. 😊 I’ll go back to painting now. 😄

Bright red amanitas are fun to paint and so are so many other mushrooms. What I don’t realise is how small and tiny some of these mushrooms really are. The photographers take amazing photos of these beautiful fungi in a way that makes them look any size they want them to be. It’s not until I see how these photos are taken with videos of photographers hunting for specimens, that I’m surprised as to their teeny tiny size.

Repost of one of the paintings that started my mushroom obsession in early 2022. I’ve been collecting so many mushroom reference photos since looking for mushrooms with bokeh backgrounds that I may need to get more storage space!

This painting is the first page of my Etchr sketchbook yet I haven’t found a suitable sketch for the next pages. I might have to work on another mushroom landscape, of course!

What’s your obsession?
I’m still figuring out why I’ve become obsessed with mushrooms. What I did find was this painting started it all. It was early in 2022 when I was on a bokeh background hunt when I found the photo that inspired this painting. From here on its been mushrooms, mushrooms and mushrooms.

I still love the bokeh backgrounds, I haven’t forgotten about them.

My preying mantis needed some company, and I thought this butterfly was a better match than another mushroom. Painting “white” is a challenge. I had to focus on the shapes and colours of the wings rather than what I thought I saw to get the dimension and form. Getting the yellow tint was also a challenge. I wanted it deep enough to be obvious it was there but no so bright that it became a different type of butterfly. I love how this turned out.
Again this is just all in watercolours in my A5 sketchbook with my Etchr brushes which I just love!

Back to my mushrooms now 😉

While flicking through many gorgeous mushroom photos I stumbled across a photo of this bright green preying mantis, and I knew I had to paint it! I was drawn in by the challenge of painting the bright greens in the insect while still trying to make him look realistic. I struggled with the leaf a bit as the paper doesn’t lend itself to blending too easily. However when going through my art stash I realised that the pan pastels were perfect for getting better blends. I love it when I can use multiple art tools and techniques. This makes me very happy. ☺️
