๐Ÿ WORLD SNAKE DAY ๐Ÿ

July 16th is World Snake Day, and with over 210 species of snake found here in Australia, we think that's plenty of reasons to celebrate!

It's also a great time to highlight the plight of some of our slithery friends. Pictured here is Big Muzz, our male Victorian Carpet python (Morelia spilota metcalfei). Also known as a Murray-Darling or Inland carpet python, he is one of two python species found right here in Victoria; sadly, both are endangered in the state ๐Ÿ˜”

Want to learn more about Big Muzz and his wild counterparts? Stay tuned for a future video ๐Ÿ

Lizards without legs? ๐Ÿฆต๐Ÿšซโ“๏ธ

This is NOT a snake! This little sweetheart is an Eastern hooded scaly-foot (Pygopus schraderi) and she belongs to a family of lizards called Pygopodidae. They may look snake-like, but they're actually a type of gecko!

If you check out the second image, you'll see what is left of her legs - her front legs are gone and evolution has greatly reduced the back legs to allow her to slide through the sand and leaf litter of her habitat, and into burrows to chase down her favourite food, wolf spiders! ๐Ÿ•ท๐Ÿฝ

Like other geckos (and VERY unlike snakes), she can lick her eyes clean, has external ear openings, and can let out a loud squeak when threatened!
