Ways to Access the Subconscious and Personal Abstract Form

Artist-led workshop with Fiona Halse

Join artist Fiona Halse for an exploratory drawing and collage workshop investigating ways to access the subconscious and discover a more personal language of abstract form.

Through a series of intuitive art-making activities, participants will explore tone, line and mark-making, using drawing and collage as tools to move beyond conscious decision-making and uncover instinctive forms, gestures and visual responses.

All materials will be provided. Participants are also invited to bring small objects or images they feel drawn to, as well as examples from their visual diaries or their own artwork to share and discuss with the group.

Workshop dates will be announced soon and tickets will be available to purchase via Eventbrite.

As part of the 2026 Biennale of Colour and Light, every ticket purchased for the Biennale Grand Opening will also automatically go into a draw for the chance to secure a place in Fiona Halse’s workshop. Winners will be selected at random and contacted via email with further details.

Studio visit for Gregory Lander’s upcoming solo exhibition, Garden of Eden.

Ladner brings a refined sensitivity to composition, balance and ornamentation and Garden of Eden is ultimately an exhibition about creation itself. It embraces spontaneity over certainty and intuition over control, celebrating the endless potential of a blank canvas transformed through gesture, rhythm and colour. The result is a body of work that is energetic yet contemplative; offering moments of visual complexity that continually unfold, much like the ever-changing abundance of a flourishing garden.

Upcoming Exhibition: Different Midnights by Mark Niehus

Opening Reception: Saturday, 29th August 2-4pm

Mark Niehus is an Australian multi-disciplinary artist based in Port Adelaide, working across painting, moving image, and poetry. With a background in photography and interface design, his practice merges technical precision with intuitive experimentation.

Different Midnights is a collection of paintings, moving image and free verse that explore the various ways individuals experience solitude.

By bringing these different stories together we are reminded of our commonalities and the value of being alone, provoking us to question how do we experience solitude.

It’s 12 am and each art work frames a life, sharing only the digestion of a day spent in the same city. Alone, not connected, dwelling, quietly celebrating or reconciling their lives, capturing each of their Different Midnights.

With paintings central to the exhibition, Niehus has continued to refine his creative process and elevate his work to new levels by exploring deeper still the degree that one can abstract a concept of emotion through the geometry of the human form, and still evoke the empathy and curiosity needed to enter the viewer into the lottery that is the transformative power of art.

Current works by Winsome Spiller on show in her solo exhibition, Seeing Place.

Seeing Place brings together a body of work exploring the many ways a place can be experienced, remembered and reimagined through art. Drawing from imagined landscapes, personal memory and documented environments, the exhibition reflects Winsome’s ongoing investigation into how places shape our emotional and visual understanding of the world around us.

Working across painting, collage, plaster, cardboard and sand, Winsome moves fluidly between abstraction and representation, allowing each work to respond intuitively to the character and atmosphere of a place. Some works emerge from direct observation, while others are reconstructed through memory, fragments of maps and sensory impressions that blur the boundaries between geography and imagination.

This gestural abstract oil painting was made exploiting the marks made by thin runny paint on canvas arranged on the studio floor, before stretching and adding gestural brushstrokes. It evokes a sense of atmospheric forces - wind, rain, gravity - acting to form a vertical landscape descending from the air to a darker, cave-like place below.

This abstract acrylic painting on canvas was made by a process of paint transfer that I developed in my studio practice. Painting in layers on clear plastic, distressing each layer then painting another layer on top, generates a field of marks and colours. After continually observing the process until a satisfying composition emerges, the paint is transferred off the plastic onto canvas.

Earth Water Fire Air could evoke an aerial view of a sea surrounded by fragmented land masses, and at the same time the colours could suggest four forces of nature: earth, water, fire and air.

The calibre of creativity and talent was exceptional, and we are incredibly excited to present our biggest Biennale of Colour and Light to date at West End Art Space.

Now it’s time to save the date!

Join us for the Opening Reception on Saturday 17 October, 2–5pm, and experience the works of all the artists selected for this year’s exhibition.

We are delighted to welcome Filitsa Giannopoulos as our guest judge, who will select the recipients of our 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes, including the opportunity to present a solo exhibition at West End Art Space.

A sincere thank you to everyone who submitted an application. We were overwhelmed by both the number and exceptional standard of submissions received this year, and we are so grateful to every artist who shared their work with us.

Thank You to Our 2026 Applicants!

The response to the 2026 Biennale of Colour and Light has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Thank you to every artist who took the time to submit their work. The calibre, diversity and creativity of this year’s applications made the selection process both inspiring and incredibly rewarding. We are deeply grateful for the enthusiasm and support shown by Victoria’s vibrant community of women abstract artists.

All artists will be notified of the outcome of their application by 4:00 pm on Thursday, 7 August.

Now, the countdown begins. The 2026 Biennale of Colour and Light will be on exhibition from 14 October – 8 November 2026, bringing together an exceptional collection of contemporary abstract practice from across the state.

Be sure to mark your diary for the Opening Reception on Saturday 17 October, 2.00 – 5.00 pm, and join us in celebration.
