Japan Photo Book By Rebeca Scibilia will be taking over The Substation Billboards opening next week Wednesday 21 August.
Scibilia employs a variety of media in her practise, focusing primarily on felt-tip and paint pens. Finding inspiration in personal experiences and popular culture, she conveys personal or collective memories through abstract forms, often weaving visual references, motifs and text into the imagery. In Japan Photo Book, each piece captures a moment in time, inspired by photographs taken throughout the trip. Characterised by assured patternmaking, the works are at once reflective and electric.
Japan Photo Book is presented by The Substation and Arts Project Australia.
The Substation billboards are located outdoors and accessible 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

We're excited to announce that Anaiwan gedyura artist Gabi Briggs is the first recipient of the 'Listening to Country — First Nations Experimental Sound Commission.' This program, the first of its kind nationally, supports First Nations artists to develop a new sound work, co-commissioned by Liquid Architecture and The Substation.
Gabi Briggs, a research-based artist, weaver, and community organiser, will use this opportunity to sonically explore her 100km walk on Country. Her work will highlight the interconnectedness and resilience within the Anaiwan Skin System, contrasting it with colonial narratives to prompt reflection on settler colonialism.
Stay tuned for the premiere at The Substation in 2025!

This work forms part of Gabi Briggs' ongoing project at West Space as part of her 2024 West Space Commission.
This initiative is generously funded by the City of Melbourne.

Sneak preview of Object of Projection, an exhibition of works by Kim Gordon. Opens tonight featuring performances from Alexander Powers and Mystic Eyes (Lisa MacKinney). Alexander Powers is an Australian-based artist whose inter-disciplinary work spans across choreography and queer performance art, as well as DJing and electronic music production under the moniker Female Wizard. Lisa MacKinney is a musician and historian who has played guitar and organ in various musical ensembles for over thirty years. Very, very close pays tribute to two central influences on Kim Gordon’s musical practice: the massed guitar drone orchestras of Rhys Chatham, with whom Gordon and other members of Sonic Youth performed, and the spoken/singing style of 1960s New York pop group The Shangri-Las. Don’t miss Harrison Ritchie-Jones’ premiere of ‘TANTRUM For 6’ next week at The Substation for PIECES. ‘TANTRUM For 6’ By Harrison Ritchie-Jones The omnipresence of the baby is frightening and special. ‘TANTRUM for 6’ is an abstract interpretation of our earliest feelings. Tickets are selling fast. Buy yours now and join us for this bold and raw work. https://thesubstation.org.au/program/pieces-2023 Harrison is an independent dancer & choreographer based in Naarm/Melbourne. His choreographic practice celebrates dance and is fuelled by a curiosity in techniques from a range of physical practices. Upskilling and blending forms, he uses dance to carve out spaces for absurdity, humour and physical virtuosity to work together in surreal and expressive explorations of storytelling. 📆Wed 6 – Sat 9 Dec, 7.30pm / Sat 9 Dec, 3.00pm 🎫$15–$30 📍The Substation PIECES is Lucy Guerin Inc’s annual dance commissioning program. PIECES artist Amrita Hepi premieres ‘The Read’ next week at The Substation. ‘The Read’ by Amrita Hepi Everybody dances, everybody has sex. Though the line for a professional in these industries is different. ‘The Read’ explores the body in professional service, in a collaboration between a choreographer/dancer and a sex worker. So often when lost in the act or observations of moments of irreverence or desire, we forget the transmissions or transgressions that have led us there. The labour that leads us to the sex, dance, pleasure, race and the brief encounter with the thrill of a body. Get your tickets now: https://thesubstation.org.au/program/pieces-2023 Amrita is an artist and choreographer based between Naarm/Melbourne and Bangkok. Born in Townsville, Amrita’s family hails from Budjulung, Ngapuhi, Polish and Irish ancestry. Her interest as an artist is in the idea of archive, particularly in relation to the body and how it is organised by people/events – beyond archives being documentation, or a bureaucratic entity. Amrita coalesces fact and fiction, memoir and ethnography, the local and the singular into the performance work she makes. Amrita trained at NAISDA & Alvin Ailey NYC, and her work sits between live performance and moving image. A critically acclaimed artist, she has twice been named winner of the People’s Choice Award as part of the Keir Choreographic Award, was part of the Forbes 30 under 30 for artists, and has shown and been commissioned nationally and internationally. 📆Wed 6 – Sat 9 Dec, 7.30pm / Sat 9 Dec, 3.00pm 🎫$15–$30 📍The Substation PIECES is Lucy Guerin Inc’s annual dance commissioning program.
