ABOUT "20 Years Later" 📖

We created “20 years later” — a digital shadow puppet short film, tracing our journeys and rites of passage as migrants in Australia. The story begins with the character Matsu, known as Jack, arriving by train at Spencer Street Station, heart pounding, uncertain, yet hopeful. 🚉

Each scene was developed through a reflective process undertaken during the early stages of our creation: the lively streets of Brunswick, the sting of alienation, the ongoing search for identity, the citizenship ceremony, a deepening appreciation of First Peoples culture and history, and the everyday realities of a multicultural society — leading to the final scene, where we are creating this work in the studio, 20 years later. 🎨

Through this work, we wish to acknowledge all the migrants who paved the way before us and contributed to shaping Australia into what it is today. 🙏

We won Best National Short Film at the 2026 Multicultural Film Festival! 🏆🎬

Last week, the Victorian Multicultural Commission (Victorian Multicultural Commission ) premiered the 8th MFF to a packed house at ACMI. Out of 767 incredible submissions, our film “20 Years Later” took home the top national prize!

Here is a piece of our winning speech:

“20 years ago, our migration journey began at Spencer Street Station. Since then, we’ve been enriched by Melbourne’s incredible diversity—the food, festivals, and languages—while navigating homesickness and finding our identity. Over two decades, we’ve deepened our appreciation of First Peoples’ culture and history. To make this film inside the Melbourne Museum and stand on this stage today is a true moment of awe. We hope it inspires younger generations to celebrate our uniqueness.”

A huge thank you to Museums Victoria and the Scanlon Foundation’s Culture Maker program for supporting us. Special thanks to Rena Singh, Ben Noonan, and Richard Greenhalgh for your amazing backing, and congrats to all the incredible nominees!

Kiki and Zuki brings a beautiful blend of shadow puppetry, performance and storytelling to kids and families.

Kiki, a dreamer from the Moon, and Zuki, a curious Earthling, embark on a journey of friendship, understanding, connection and resilience.

Kiki and Zuki was inspired by the artists’ personal migrant experience of navigating two cultures in Australia. Book in to view a performance by artists Taka Takiguchi () and Youbi Lee () with the poetic soundscape created by a composer Ai Yamamoto () , and a workshop to make a shadow puppet with the artists.
