We have decided to wait until Sue returns from OS to get back to life drawing. The omicrom variant is just so contagious we thought this was the right thing to do atm.
Hope to see you all in June!!

Opening event date has changed
Colour In
A solo exhibition by Kate Hendry
Opening event Sat August 14th 5-7pm

Colour In is an exhibition of abstract sculptures and drawings that have been paired according to colour, line and shape.

This exhibition presents a series of works developed in response to works made during the extended lockdown in Melbourne 2020. The original drawings were intimate coloured pencil drawings inspired by stained-glass windows and illuminated manuscripts. This exhibition extends these motifs further, and incorporates the individual fractured glass pieces from kaleidoscopes. Whilst they remain contained and restrained, they represent an expansion of the original idea, with each given greater space.

The exhibited works move from a monochromatic series of drawings and the partnered sculpture into full coloured works which are true to an abbreviated colour wheel. The coloured pairs of pencil drawing and steel sculpture translate the block colour and shape of the drawing into a relief form through measured use of line. In this exhibition of works I am interested in how each selected colour sits on the surface of the paper, on the steel and ultimately in the white box of the gallery space.

The date of the opening may change due to lockdown.
Gallery closed for lockdown until further notice.

We are very happy to announce Aaron Hoffman is the recipient of our sponsored studio for 2021

Aaron Hoffman is a Naarm (Melbourne) based artist whose practice examines fragile states of existence generated by immersive installation and video work. The human condition is explored through architectural intervention to activate the metaphoric potential of site, and to produce new forms of contemporary dialogue within the contexts of embodiment and its wider cultural significance.

Aaron Hoffman is currently a Phd candidate at Deakin University. He completed a Masters of Fine Art (Research) at University of Melbourne in 2018. Recent exhibitions include: Presencing, The Project Space, 2020; Vent, Sutton Projects, 2017; Up Right, Blocked Out, KINGS Artist-Run, 2017; Ocean/Oceano, Hilo Galeria (Argentina), 2016; Hatched, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, 2016; and Debut XII, Blindside Gallery, 2016. Hoffman was awarded the Sutton Gallery Emerging Artist Award in 2016 and the Art 150 Fellowship in 2018.

Congratulations Aaron!

The project

The project is to create a set of affordable, professional artist studios and an international artist residency, that are partially funded by patrons and art lovers.

I've been planning and working on this idea for about a year now. I'm very excited about this project and thought you would be too.

The society we are currently living in doesn't make it easy for artists. With support from our government drying up and now virtually non-existent, it is up to us to make sure that art gets made. I want to get patrons involved in a direct way with artist's day-to-day work. This could take many forms and some examples might be that the patron pays for the artist studio for the year, providing some mentoring and hopefully friendships will form. In return the artist might give some art to the patron, hold personal workshops with the patron and host studio visits maybe once a month. It would be an individual agreement between the two people.

At it's essence, it's really about the love of art, new friendships and making stuff happen.
